Millennium Fellowship Project: Ben's Community Attic

At Penn, University surplus equipment are liquidated by internal redistribution (ben's attic), or sold in auctions (govdeals and mannheim auto auctions). Source: https://cms.business-services.upenn.edu/purchasing/sustainable-purchasing/green-products-and-services/surplus-property.html I would like to create a platform for this to benefit the local wider community, and students who might benefit from low cost used equipment. This circular economy can be implemented either by a physical store or an online catalog that allows easier access to the items, compared to auctions. This is highly feasible, considering that nearby universities like Temple and Drexel are implementing something similar. In addition, the university can work with the city government to understand what the needs of the school and community, so that the used items can be put to better used. This platform can also be also be extended to involve the student body, who might be involved in refurbishing/cleaning/preparing items. Those who wish to put items up for sale can also do so.

About the Millennium Fellow

Hian Leng grew up in urban Singapore, where he learnt to cherish and protect the slivers of nature that are fast disappearing in today’s society.
Hian Leng is a strong believer that youth involvement and meaningful dialogue are key to solving large scale environmental issues. He is a youth representative for the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM), representing 57 million youths across the world at events like the UNGA, Stockholm+50 and COP 28. As an avid tinkerer and an Engineering student at the University of Pennsylvania, he seeks to use his skills to save the environment. In 2020, his hobby of repairing and refurbishing old electronics was featured by Singaporean online marketplace Carousell, as part of the #trashtotreasure video series. This was done in partnership with the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment, as part of the Singapore Green Plan 2030.
Hian Leng is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania.
