Millennium Fellowship Project: Pathway to Math Success

Pathway to Math Success is a student-led initiative designed to support university students who struggle with basic mathematics. At AUW, students come from many different countries and educational systems, and not all have had strong math preparation before entering university. This often leads to anxiety and loss of confidence when they face courses such as statistics, economics, and data analysis. The project aims to strengthen their foundational math skills so they can succeed academically and approach mathematics with confidence rather than fear.
The program began with small peer-learning groups that focused on essential topics like fractions, algebra, percentages, and problem-solving. Lessons were simple, practical, and filled with real-life examples to make abstract ideas easier to understand. Students were encouraged to ask questions freely, work in teams, and learn from one another without judgment. This supportive environment helped many students move from being anxious to explaining solutions confidently to their peers.
Through leadership training and collaboration with Millennium Fellows, the project grew into a sustainable, volunteer-supported model. Today, Pathway to Math Success shows that with empathy, creativity, and consistency, math can become approachable, enjoyable, and empowering for every student.
