" I am passionate about advancing sustainability in education because meaningful knowledge is vital to drive long-term change. My desire to become a Millennium Fellow stems from the opportunity to strengthen my leadership abilities and collaborate with others to create practical solutions that empower communities and foster circular thinking. This experience will boost my capacity to align education with the SDGs and generate impact beyond the classroom. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Empowering sustainable Innovation in Underserved Schools
The project will involve visiting local high schools especially in under-resourced areas, to teach students simple ways they can use everyday materials and basic technology to solve environmental problems. Through fun, practical sessions, students will learn how to build things like solar-powered phone chargers or water filters. The project will end with a small event where students can share what they have created with their school and community. It's all about helping young people learn useful skills and take small steps to care for their environment.
About the Millennium Fellow
Brian Machugu Mwangi is a fourth-year student at Chuka University, dedicated to attaining a Bachelor of Education Science degree. Being enthusiastic about sustainability and community development, Brian is determined to make education an effective means to contribute to the process of environmental awareness and social change. His curiosity about the concept of circular economy and sustainable living has motivated him to create learning opportunities that cultivate responsible consumption, especially in the underserved community. Brian wants to become a teacher and a transformer, in the sense that he not only teaches science to the young but also mobilizes the next generation to take action and change the world, meeting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
