" A phrase from Onora O’Neill’s paper The Dark Side of Human Rights resonated deeply with me: “It is one thing to provide a right, it is another to ensure its enforcement.” I believe that knowing one’s rights and duties is essential, and through the Millennium Fellowship, I aspire to advance legal literacy and help ensure that access to justice becomes a reality for all. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Jan Chetna

We, the Fellowship Cohort of the class of 2025, from Dr. B.R. Ambedkar National Law University have decided on a common project considering India's upcoming Independence Day on the 15th of August. Our college is based in a rural area which has a school in the nearby village. Our aim is to execute our project in a three-pronged approach: 1. We aim to create a "Adhikaar Diwar" or a Rights Wall in the School. This wall, will feature numerous well-researched and curated topical pamphlets on areas such as Basic Legal rights, women's hygiene, topics of civic awareness etc. 2. For eight weeks, on thursdays (Jan Chetna Series) the eight members of the cohort will individually share a topic closest to their heart with the students and members of the local community. At the end of each session, we will hold a short feedback round to accurately assess our impact while the project is ongoing and address relevant lacunae, if any in our communication. 3. Later, we aim to conclude using a short quiz on all the topics that we cover during those eight weeks, (Pamphlets of which will be on the "Adhikaar Diwar" wall in English and Hindi). We will then proceed with a short felicitation ceremony for the winners of the quiz.

About the Millennium Fellow

Advityaa Makkar, a final-year law student at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar National Law University, Sonipat, is deeply committed to harnessing the power of law for social change. Her journey into philanthropy began at 16, when she spent a summer tutoring underprivileged children, an experience that cemented her belief in education as a transformative force. Through the Millennium Fellowship, she aspires to advance legal literacy in rural communities, empowering individuals to understand and claim their rights. Guided by years of volunteer service and pro bono legal work, Advityaa envisions a world where access to justice is not a privileged, but a universal reality.
