The "5 Days of Sustainability" project is a week-long initiative led by the IIT Delhi - Abu Dhabi cohort, designed to drive measurable action toward the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 11, 12, and 13. By focusing on resource efficiency, hands-on ecological engagement, and future-forward innovation, the project aims to establish a verified model for sustainable community practice within the university ecosystem.
The project directly addresses SDG 11 by cultivating a resilient and empowered community capable of generating and implementing sustainable solutions for its future. SDG 12 is tackled by emphasizing reuse and waste reduction, thereby decoupling consumption from environmental strain. Finally, SDG 13 is supported by reducing the institutional carbon footprint and promoting nature-based solutions. The university campus is treated as a critical testing ground for these innovations.
Day 1: The Circular Economy in Education (Book Donation Camp)
The week begins with the Book Donation Camp, a practical demonstration of the circular economy principle (SDG 12). Seniors donate their used academic textbooks to juniors, significantly reducing the demand for new production, minimizing resource consumption (paper, energy, water), and lowering educational costs for students.
Day 2: Eliminating Waste at the Source (BYOB Campaign)
Day two features the Bring Your Own Bottle (BYOB) Campaign, focusing on radical waste reduction. The campaign encourages all students and faculty to use reusable containers, directly eliminating the consumption of single-use paper cups at water and coffee dispensers. This results in an immediate, traceable decrease in daily operational waste, thus lowering the associated carbon footprint (SDG 13).
Day 3: Connecting with Conservation (Mangrove Park Reserve Field Trip)
The mid-week activity is an immersive field trip to a local Mangrove Park Reserve. This experience shifts focus to natural resources, educating students about mangroves—a vital blue carbon ecosystem—and their critical role in carbon sequestration and climate change mitigation (SDG 13). This activity builds practical appreciation for local conservation and ecological resilience (SDG 11).
Day 4: Innovation Engine (SUSTAINNOVATE Hackathon)
Day 4 is dedicated to the Sustainnovate Hackathon 2025. This event marks the inaugural technical hackathon hosted by IIT Delhi – Abu Dhabi as part of the ‘Afkar’ technical fest. It invites students to create impactful prototypes that aim to make campuses greener, more innovative, and more sustainable. The hackathon aligns with the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 vision and promotes innovation in areas like clean energy, waste management, and climate resilience. This activity serves as a powerful engine for innovation, channelling intellectual effort into actionable sustainability proposals (SDGs 11, 13).
Day 5: Global Dialogue on Solutions (IGNITE Event)
The week culminates with the IIT Delhi–Abu Dhabi Ignite event. Ignite brings together scientists, startups, investors, policymakers, and industry leaders to address pressing global challenges across various sectors, including energy, climate, health technologies, quantum innovation, food and water security, defence and aerospace, space, and next-generation mobility. Jointly organised by the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi–Abu Dhabi, the American Chemical Society (ACS), FortyTwo.VC, and IvyCap Ventures, with support from our ecosystem partner startAD, this event reflects a shared commitment to fostering cutting-edge research and innovation (SDGs 11, 12, 13).
