Millennium Fellowship Project: Project reJUvenate
Jahangirnagar University is a public University which is known for its greenery and biodiversity. The 700-acre campus is home to various species of plants and welcomes migrating birds every year. Unfortunately, due to mismanagement and a lack of a proper waste disposal system, the entirety of the campus has become a waste dumping site. The water bodies are the ultimate victims of this dumping leading to a sharp decline in the number of migratory birds, posing a threat to the diverse wildlife of this campus. Project reJUvenate highlights the word JU, which stands for Jahangirnagar University. Initially, we aim to start with a pilot project focusing on the faculty of social science. We ultimately aim to set up a full-fledged waste disposal system around campus and return JU to its past glory. We have some short term goals like develop a pilot program and implement a segregated waste management and disposal system, raise awareness about waste segregation, arranging voluntary cleaning initiatives, present a proposal to authorities to make the biogas plant functional again and long term goals like expand the waste management & disposal initiative all over the campus, set up a sustainable biodegradable waste disposal system.
