" I have been working to support and create structures that not only meet the current needs of foster children but also maintain their overall health and longevity. Their burden is not mine, but I cannot stand idly by and watch while they suffer—this is the empathetic leadership that I have brought to my work with foster care and will bring to any issue I work on in the future. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: LiftED: Empowering Foster Youth Through Education

This project aims to enhance educational access and support for foster children in Lawrence, Kansas, through mentorship, resource distribution, and advocacy for equitable policies. Key components shape the growth and sustainability of the program. First, this project is based on needs assessed and found through conversations and surveys of foster families in the area. This was followed by building up the necessary partnerships to make these goals happen. The current plan, based on the previously mentioned assessment, is to create an educational mentorship program with the existing organization, Foster Village. We match foster youth with mentors who would provide one-on-one tutoring in core subjects. We also incorporate college/career readiness workshops for older foster youth. Through this process, there is resource distribution to families who may need assistance to support their students’ educational success. We have also developed "homeschool packets" for families to continue learning during summer and winter because these breaks often contribute to substantial learning loss, especially for foster children. At the end of the semester, there will be an evaluation to measure the program's impact through surveys, test scores/grades, and mentorship feedback. This data will inform the final part of this plan which is advocating for the needs of foster youth in schools to hopefully create long-lasting change and programs based on what is learned.
