Millennium Fellowship Project: Sustainable Land Use: Urban Farming Model

Sustainable Land Use: Building an Urban Farming Model for a Hunger-Free Kenya is a community-driven project at Mount Kenya University that transforms underutilized urban spaces into productive, sustainable farms. Using vertical and cone gardening systems, the initiative enables high-yield organic vegetable production in small plots, backyards, and balconies. It integrates Black Soldier Fly (BSF) technology to convert organic waste into nutrient-rich compost and recycles coconut husks into coco peat for soil enhancement. Piloted in Runda Estate, Thika Town, Kiambu County, the project empowers low- and middle-income households with fresh, affordable food while promoting environmental stewardship. It directly advances SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, with ripple effects on SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).
