" I am looking forward to being a Millennium Fellow to find a way to combine my interest in both legal research and policy with substantial social change. I feel that law is more than a set of rules, it is about giving communities the ability to have power, and I feel that my skills are meant to be utilized to bring equity, justice and sustainable change. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: DAYAN

The idea behind our DAYAN project is to work for the welfare of women who are ostracized by society and are branded as "witches" or "Dayan" subjecting them to heinous social ostracization and violence, often leading to their death. I come from a small state in India - Bihar and am currently doing my undergraduate degree in Jharkhand and the practice of witch-hunting has deeply ingrained itself in the rural pockets of both states involving not just superstitions but also a lot of gender bias and systemic neglect of women, especially widows or those coming from the marginalized community. As a student of Law, I feel it's my responsibility to draw the system's attention to this grave superstition of witch crafting provide legal aid to those women, and help them get out of this situation. So we plan to identify these women and help them through various NGOs.
