" I am one of the few who deeply believe in the narrative that Nigeria will get better. Every time I speak with the innovative minds of our country, I see the incredible heights we could reach if only things were structured right. Being part of this minority, I know resources are scarce—but I choose to hold onto this vision and work toward making it a reality. From partaking in this fellowship, I hope I can turn that ideation into execution. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: The Dullness Behind Smart Cities in Nigeria

As the world continues to evolve, though opposed to many’s presumptions, Africa continues to evolve with it; this synchronized evolution goes to the extent of sub-Saharan nations mimicking Western paradigms and importing their infrastructure methods into our societies. Having evolved passed sustainable architecture our villages relied upon, and now adopted a more colonial approach, Nigeria has begun to welcome the concept of Smart Cities - urban areas reliant upon ICT tools - to improve their urban efficiency and overall quality of life. However, one must wonder how this implementation of technological-based cities affects the ongoing housing crisis Nigeria has been subjected to since its inception? The guise Smart Cities are birthed under is to be a social class-adhesive, however, we are noticing a severe increase in not only poverty but homelessness as well, making Nigeria a top country in global housing deficit. Thus, this study seeks to uncover the many socio-economic externalities that are withheld by Smart Cities, and as well locate an alternative solution to the crisis.
