" Being a part of the Millennium Fellowship will help me interact with like-minded individuals who share the same level of passion for advancing the UN SDGs. I am excited to hear and work on different, creative, and collaborative ideas. Learning how to work and function well and productively in a team is an important and necessary life skill, and the Millennium Fellowship will aid me in achieving that. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Clothing India
Clothing India is a two-fold project under the broader theme of clothing—first, to provide clothing where it’s needed most, and second, to design clothing that empowers communities. Leg A: Providing Clothing Starting with the Jindal campus’s proximity to rural Sonepat, I aim to organize clothing drives for communities that lack access to basic clothing. Building on past work with NGOs like Seva Sadan in Mumbai, especially with women and persons with disabilities, this phase will expand to underserved areas in Maharashtra. With the help of student volunteers, we’ll also conduct on-ground demographic research to better understand local needs and tailor our support accordingly. Leg B: Designing Clothing The second leg celebrates rural creativity. In collaboration with local universities and student designers, we’ll co-create garments based on ethnic village designs. These clothes will be produced by local artisans and launched through a student-focused e-commerce platform as a pilot. If successful, we’ll scale to larger online platforms—generating revenue, creating employment, and promoting local design talent. In short, we first clothe communities in need, and then we clothe the country in its own beautiful, homegrown designs—making clothing not just a basic need, but a source of dignity, creativity, and livelihood.
About the Millennium Fellow
Vaidehi Sharma is a third-year law student at O.P. Jindal Global University. She was born in Delhi and is currently pursuing a B.A. LL.B. from Jindal Global Law School in Sonipat. Throughout her childhood, Vaidehi’s family shifted from one city to another every 2–3 years. Her interest in environmental justice stems from this very exposure to different cities in her country, which made her realize the ubiquitous nature of the climate crisis. She is also passionate about gender justice, intersectionality, and feminism. She regularly publishes articles on Gender and Society and is part of the UN initiative, Girl Up. She is also a member of The Final Stand, a student-led climate advocacy society. She wishes to advance the cause of climate and gender justice as a Millennium Fellow.
