" "My purpose is forged in the resilience I witnessed and experienced fleeing conflict in Sudan. That journey, fueled by compassion for the families who lack access to basic healthcare and education, now guides my work. The Millennium Fellowship will be a critical step in turning my on-the-ground experience into scalable solutions, strengthening my leadership skills and connecting me with a global network to amplify my initiatives and contribute meaningfully to the SDGs." Millennium Fellowship Project: Her Voice, Her Choice Initiative
Her Voice, Her Choice Initiative is a community-centered project I founded to strengthen menstrual health education, dignity, and empowerment for adolescent girls and young women. Through this initiative, I work to break harmful taboos around menstruation, provide accurate information, and create safe spaces where girls can openly discuss their challenges without fear or shame.
In my sessions, I use participatory learning methods that allow girls to express their experiences with stigma, pain, school absenteeism, and limited access to hygiene products. I also intentionally include boys, caregivers, and community leaders so that menstrual health becomes a shared social responsibility rather than a burden placed only on girls.
Beyond education, Her Voice, Her Choice Initiative addresses structural barriers that make managing menstruation difficult. I collaborate with local partners to improve access to reusable pads, promote safe hygiene practices, and advocate for better WASH facilities in schools. My work also focuses on building girls’ confidence, helping them understand their bodies, and equipping them with knowledge that supports informed SRHR decision-making.
Overall, the Her Voice, Her Choice Initiative aims to create an environment where girls feel empowered, supported, and respected. By promoting dialogue, awareness, and community involvement, I am helping to reduce stigma and ensure that no girl’s opportunities are limited by her period.
