" Being a part of the Millennium Fellowship will allow me to develop my project in the most sustainable way. This is crucial because the key value proposition of the project is ensuring the prevention of greenwashing in sustainable fashion. Additionally, I will engage with a community that shares my mindset and passion for ambitious impact work. This will help me find a sense of belonging at university and in the global Millennium Fellowship community. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Edena
Throughout my Sustainability degree, I have realized sustainability product certifications are not adequate for informing consumers about product sustainability. Micro businesses that "deserve" these certifications cannot afford them, so do not get certified. Larger businesses may choose only "easy" certifications, distracting consumers from sustainability shortcomings. My team's market research into fashion e-commerce consumer sentiment also revealed many of the target audience of sustainable fashion businesses (urban Millennial women) spend too much time finding brands, lack a consolidated marketplace, and deal with product returns. These shoppers could use sustainable fashion marketplaces, but these largely accept brands based on self-disclosed information. That is why we created Edena. Edena is an online fashion marketplace that aims to reshape how we shop for sustainable fashion. It connects conscious consumers with sustainable local micro producers verified solely by documents and photos they can provide rather than self-disclosed information, offers energy-efficient, measurement-based virtual try-ons to minimize product returns, and provides an affiliate marketing channel for micro businesses. Hence, Edena addresses SDG9 by creating an infrastructure for conscious consumption and supporting local economies, SDG12 by enabling responsible purchases of sustainable fashion, and prevents a negative impact on SDG 7 and 13 by operating on net zero software.
