" "From my time working within the startup ecosystem, being able to communicate the importance of an idea is oftentimes even more important than the idea itself. Speaking to thousands of fellows, all over the globe, can thus only serve to sharpen these skills - which is just one of the reasons why I am excited to be a Millennium Fellow". "
Millennium Fellowship Project: ModPill
In the UK alone, more than 2 million elderly people are living by themselves. It’s not easy getting to that age- the average pensioner has to take over 10 different kinds of pill per day. Naturally, many forget or mismanage their medication regimens, leading to geriatric falls, nasty side effects, and worsening health conditions. ModPill is designed to combat this issue by storing the medication of the elderly in a small, electronic device. Each specific type of pill is stored in its own compartment, and specific alerts are provided for when and what the user needs to take – each different compartment lights up independently. This allows for elderly people to be independent for longer, avoiding having to enter a care home, which, frankly, many regard as a ‘death sentence’. By linking to an app where family/carers can remotely access the status of the device (eg if pills have been taken), relatives of these pensioners can gain peace of mind, and are able to instantly know if any issues occur. Whilst there are many pill reminder/organiser products already out there, ModPill is the only device which keeps pills in their original packaging - as recommended by both doctors and carers.
