I am excited to collaborate with like-minded change makers to make lasting and sustainable positive impact in the healthcare system for a healthier future. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Protect your Eyes Project
The Protect Your Eyes project aims to educate and create awareness about often-overlooked everyday habits that can lead to long-term eye defects, particularly among students and lecturers who spend extended periods on phones, laptops, and reading hard copies. These habits include, but are not limited to, prolonged screen time, incorrect viewing distances and angles, very small font sizes, blue light exposure, and inadequate breaks during study sessions. According to Dr. Ajith Karunarathne, "Excessive screen time can lead to eye strain, dryness, and irritation, increasing the risk of eye diseases such as cataracts and age-related macular degeneration." Additionally, according to Dr. Mohamed Dirani, "Prolonged viewing of screens at incorrect distances and angles can increase the risk of myopia and other eye problems in children and adults." This project will also educate the university community on how to modify their lifestyle to eliminate these eye-damaging habits. Research has shown that out of the 2.2 billion people with eye defects, at least 1 billion of these vision impairments could have been prevented. The Protect Your Eyes project will collaborate with ISPOR HEOR UNN, Tesh Specialist Eye Hospital Nsukka, and the Rotaract Club of UNN to spread awareness across the campus.
