" As a person who likes to be intentional about her affairs, being a Millennium Fellow would enable me bring my ideas to life by relating and interacting with like-minded individuals. Being a part of the Millennium Fellowship will also broaden my horizon and allow me to acquire more knowledge and gain more insight into projects I'm passionate about. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Combating Antimicrobial Resistance
This project focuses on combating antimicrobial resistance (AMR) through awareness creation and data-driven analysis of antibiotic usage patterns. The initiative is being carried out in the Family Medicine Unit of a hospital, targeting both patients and healthcare seekers. The project aims to educate individuals on the dangers of antimicrobial resistance, promote responsible use of antibiotics, and highlight preventive measures to reduce misuse in both humans and livestock.
Over 120 people are expected to benefit from this awareness campaign. The program includes a brief orientation session led by a team member, covering key topics such as:
1. What antibiotics are and their proper uses
2. The dangers associated with misuse and overuse of antibiotics
3. The importance of using antibiotics only when prescribed by qualified health professionals
4. Ways to prevent the spread of antimicrobial resistance in humans, animals, and farm produce
To assess the level of knowledge and patterns of antibiotic use among participants, a structured questionnaire will be distributed. The questionnaire will collect data on:
1. Individual experiences with antibiotic use
2. Whether antibiotics were obtained through prescription or self-medication
3. The classes of antibiotics most frequently used without prescription
After data collection, responses will be analyzed to determine the percentage of exposure to antibiotics and identify the most commonly misused antibiotic classes. The findings will provide valuable insights into public antibiotic usage behavior and serve as a foundation for recommending effective awareness and intervention strategies to mitigate antimicrobial resistance.
