Millennium Fellowship Project: Student CPR Certification Program

West Philadelphia has historically faced public safety and health challenges, along with the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to continually worsening rates of violence and lack of healthcare resources. Determinants of health in this community are significantly influenced by socio-economic factors – employment, crime, and education– and clinical care accessibility. Therefore I am proposing a program that trains interested high school students in CPR. Classes can be hosted at my school, the University of Pennsylvania, with certified instructors. This project would be beneficial not only for the involved students, but for the greater West Philadelphia community. This initiative would empower students by fostering critical skills and professional opportunities in healthcare but would also enhance emergency response capabilities within the community, ultimately promoting resilience, health, and safety. Through recruitment of motivated students from underserved local high schools, and local instructors, the goal is to certify a cohort of students that can pursue higher education and serve their community.
