Millennium Fellowship Project: TriMed

In rural Bangladesh, accessing emergency medical care is a major challenge. Ambulances are costly, often unavailable, and can take hours to reach urban areas due to traffic or road limitations. My project aims to solve this by converting auto rickshaws—common three-wheeled vehicles—into emergency transport, reducing response times significantly. Instead of building new ambulances, we’re modifying existing rickshaws to make them suitable for patient transport. These modifications include adding a recliner seat, an oxygen cylinder, and basic medical supplies. We’re also enhancing the suspension to make the ride more comfortable for patients. The core of this project is a system that connects families in need of urgent medical help with rickshaw drivers. The family will use an app to notify an emergency, and nearby rickshaw drivers will receive real-time alerts. The driver will then go to the patient’s home, pick them up, and use GPS to take them to the hospital, saving valuable time compared to traditional ambulance services. This initiative isn’t about replacing ambulances but providing a faster, more accessible, and affordable option. By using vehicles already available in these areas, we can cut response times in half, ensuring people get the medical care they need when every minute counts.

About the Millennium Fellow

Tasfiea Tasnum is a student at Vanderbilt University, pursuing a double major in Neuroscience and Human and Organizational Development. Growing up in Bangladesh, she was surrounded by vibrant culture and a strong sense of community, while becoming aware of the disparities in access to resources and opportunities. One of her earliest memories is her Nani telling her to “grow like a banyan tree” — to root herself deeply, grow steadily, and extend her branches to shelter others. Over time, her experiences have led her to engage in work that connects people, ideas, and perspectives, guided by empathy and a curiosity for understanding how the world works. Her academic path reflects a desire to merge scientific knowledge with a human-centered approach, exploring not only how the brain functions but how social structures shape lives. As a Millennium Fellow (Class of 2025), she continues to engage in research, intercultural collaboration, and community service, committed to making a tangible difference. Tasfiea envisions a future where her work bridges the gap between knowledge and action, contributing to a more equitable and compassionate world.
