" Millennium Fellowship Project: Spelman Elevate Kids "The Spelman Elevate Kids Project is a community-based initiative designed and facilitated by the Spelman College Millennium Fellows. The project aligns with SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 5 (Gender Equality) by providing equitable access to knowledge, creative exploration, and mentorship for young students. The Bootcamp was carried out at Carver High School, where Fellows engaged directly with students in their own learning environment. The first component centered on period education and wellness support. Students learned about the menstrual cycle, myths and facts, proper hygiene, and ways to reduce stigma surrounding menstruation. While girls received more targeted support, male students were also included to help build empathy and awareness. To offer practical assistance, the team distributed more than 40 pads and pad cases to girls in attendance. The second component focused on self-expression through art. Students received painting materials and participated in guided activities that encouraged them to use art as a healthy outlet for emotional expression and stress relief. This creative space allowed students to explore their identities and feelings in a supportive environment. The third component provided mentorship and college readiness. Spelman students shared their experiences at Spelman College, discussed the college application process, and offered guidance on how to succeed academically and socially in college. This gave students access to relatable role models and helped them imagine future educational opportunities. Overall, the Spelman Elevate Kids Project combined health education, creativity, and mentorship to support students at Carver High School. By promoting menstrual equity, nurturing self-expression, and encouraging higher education pathways, the project made meaningful contributions toward SDG 4 and SDG 5, empowering students to grow with confidence and knowledge." Along with this, the global guidance I will receive will enhance my understanding, sharpen my problem-solving skills, and strengthen my resourcefulness. I aim to develop the right skills to create a meaningful impact in my surroundings and contribute on a larger scale. " Millennium Fellowship Project: Roshni My name is Zobia Memon, and I was selected as a Millennium Fellow under the Millennium Campus Network (MCN) in my fourth year. I come from Larkana, a small city in Pakistan, where education is still developing and traditional teaching methods are common. When I started university, I understood that higher education is not just about attending classes or passing exams. It requires curiosity, discussion, and the courage to ask questions. I realized that real learning happens when students are encouraged to think freely, share ideas, and connect lessons with real-life experiences. It pushed me to look back at how I was taught. In many schools across Pakistan, especially in smaller cities like Larkana, learning still depends too much on memorization. Students are often taught to repeat what is written in books rather than to understand and explore. Because of this, many lose interest and stop enjoying the learning process. Through my university experience, I understood that education should be more than just gaining knowledge. True learning helps students grow, think deeply, and understand life better, and children in my hometown deserve to learn in such a manner. This understanding became even stronger when I went abroad as part of the Global UGRAD Exchange Program. During that time, I volunteered at Linfield Kindergarten, and the experience completely changed how I viewed education. I saw how stories, games, encouragement, and creativity made learning joyful for children. Every lesson was full of curiosity and excitement. I learned that when primary education is engaging, it develops a lasting love for learning in children. When I returned to Pakistan, I came with a purpose to contribute and make learning more meaningful for children. That is how my project, Roshni, began. I chose SDG 4: Quality Education because I truly believe it is the foundation for all other goals. Every kind of progress, whether it is reducing poverty, promoting gender equality, or tackling climate change, starts with education. Without quality education, no real change can happen. For me, staying committed to SDG 4 is very important because quality education has the power to change lives and strengthen entire communities. It opens minds, builds empathy, and helps people make better choices for themselves and others. Without a strong educational foundation, no progress can truly last. I want to play my part, even in small ways, by making learning more enjoyable and accessible for children in my community. Through Roshni, I aim to create learning experiences that interactively build understanding and awareness. I believe that when children learn through curiosity and compassion, they grow into empathetic and responsible individuals. " Millennium Fellowship Project: She Leads In Chittagong, where we currently live, we’ve observed that the majority of females begin school but do not finish it due to early marriage. Girls are being raised by families with the expectation that they would become housewives when they grow up. Such ideas discourage many talented females from pursuing careers. Reports have shown that many married women in Bangladesh are abused physically, mentally, sexually or economically at some point in their lives by their husbands. In such cases most girls do not leave their husbands because they are not financially self-sufficient. If a girl is educated enough, she will be able to protest against such violence and come out of this situation. That’s why we propose conducting sessions with local girls between the ages of 10 and 18 along with their families. We will learn in these sessions how essential it is for a girl to have an academic focus. During these sessions, we will help them realize that a girl’s life should have goals beyond being married. Our project will show them several viewpoints on how pursuing higher education might enhance one’s quality of life. We’ll additionally talk about freelancing as a career option for those girls who are looking for financial solvency. We will prioritize the development of their skills, including interpersonal and other relevant competencies. By earning from home, they can carry out their academic fees and they can avoid reliance on others. This opportunity will help me amplify my social impact, connect with change makers worldwide, and align my work with the UNAI principles and SDGs—transforming ideas into tangible contributions for a better future. " Millennium Fellowship Project: Project Nirmol In Period pain isn't just cramps. It’s a crisis when your zip code decides if you bleed with dignity. In Bangladesh, every three in four women and girls face barriers to accessing menstrual hygiene products. To many from lower economic backgrounds, period isn't pink; period is misery. They don't have access to sanitary pads or menstrual education. A vast number of people in my country who don't have enough knowledge and suffer from many issues. Frequent floods, salinity in the coastal region, and the pain they endure lead many to consume birth control pills. The misuse of contraceptive pills causes complex issues like thyroid problems, hormonal imbalance, skin issues, chronic diseases, and even cervical cancer. They resort to such measures just to stop bleeding, which depicts the lack of awareness and menstrual education. The concentration of heavy metals causes some serious health issues to the young girls as well. According to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (2018), 61% of rural households and 27% of urban households lack improved sanitation facilities, making it difficult for people to manage menstruation hygienically. 91% of women from low-income communities continue to use cloth due to cost concerns. Therefore, we’re working on Project Nirmol, where will host workshops in community schools and conduct health sessions in rural regions. We need to contact rural schools and conduct online seminar sessions where people can communicate directly with health specialists. This can help us understand what's going on and who needs what. Hygiene Apa, a youth led project in rural and suburban regions, will educate and mentor school teachers to run community based campaigns creating grassroots impact. Awareness is the key. Since not everyone has a smartphone, this project caters to SDG 3 (Good Health), SDG 6 (ensuring clean water and sanitation for all) and SDG 4 (Education for all) and by directly engaging with the primary and high school students and the community mothers. Flashcards on sanitation and menstrual education make it more compelling and easy for mothers to understand visually. By contacting the school authorities, we can distribute these flashcards and they can teach them in their classrooms. With these flashcards, teachers can teach students how to sanitize properly, handle contaminated water, and learn about menstrual hygiene visually. They can bring these flashcards home, basically becoming health advocates for their own community. And by distributing sanitary pads, we can ensure awareness, so that they know something called "sanitary pads" exists other than normal clothes, which cause cancer. For Project Nirmol, the measurable goals are designed to track tangible impact on both students and community members. We aim to distribute 100 sanitary pads per school visit, ensuring that women and girls in participating communities have access to proper menstrual hygiene products. Flashcards on sanitation and menstrual education will be distributed to 40 students per pilot school, with at least 80% of students demonstrating understanding of key concepts through short quizzes or interactive activities. Teachers will be trained to use these flashcards effectively, with 10 teachers per school completing the training and conducting at least two classroom sessions per month. We plan to host three health sessions targeting 25 community mothers per session, recording attendance and collecting feedback to measure awareness and engagement. Additionally, we will monitor households for the adoption of proper sanitation practices, such as handwashing, pad drying, and clean water usage, using follow-up surveys and visits to ensure the interventions are creating lasting change. We believe compassionate action is all it takes. And with our project Nirmol, we hope to empower communities to become health advocates for themselves.
