Now a commerce student at Kirori Mal college, University of Delhi, he works to turn ideas into actions that help others. From teaching underprivileged children with Teach For India to creating "Pankh" a platform connecting donors with the students in need, Vishal's path is shaped by empathy, curiosity, and a belief that even small steps can create lasting impact. UNITED NATIONS ACADEMIC IMPACT AND MCN PROUDLY PRESENT VISHAL SHIVHARE, A MILLENNIUM FELLOW FOR THE CLASS OF 2025. University of Delhi North Campus | New Delhi, India | Advancing SDG 4, SDG 4 & UNAI 3 " I have always believed that big changes start small — with a conversation, a helping hand, or a single new idea. For me, the Millennium Fellowship is not just a program; it’s a chance to learn with people who share the same dream of making the world better. I do this work because I have seen how even a small effort can open doors for someone, and when we open enough doors, we create a world that is fairer, kinder, and full of hope. " Millennium Fellowship Project: Pankh: Bridging the Needy and Donors Pankh—meaning “wings” in Hindi—embodies the spirit of hope, dignity, and empowerment. The project was born from a simple observation: while many people wish to help those in need, there often exists a gap between generosity and genuine access. Pankh seeks to bridge that gap by creating a transparent and human-centered channel that connects donors directly with underprivileged individuals and communities. Our initiative works on three levels—identification, connection, and transformation. We begin by identifying the needs of marginalized families, students, and communities through local volunteers and verified social workers. Next, we connect these needs with potential donors—individuals, organizations, and youth collectives—who are willing to contribute resources, funds, or mentorship. Finally, we document and share impact stories that inspire others to join the movement, fostering a cycle of empathy-driven change. Beyond material support, Pankh aims to restore dignity to giving and receiving. Each act of kindness is treated not as charity, but as solidarity—a step toward shared humanity. By emphasizing transparency, storytelling, and sustainable partnerships, Pankh strives to build a culture where compassion is not occasional, but continuous. In essence, Pankh gives “wings” to those who dream but lack means—and to those who wish to make a difference but need direction. Through this project, I envision a community where giving is personal, empowering, and transformative for everyone involved. Only he can control how the plane of your life takes off. None of us have control in how we take birth or how we die." - This is a quote which I heard long back; and I kept questioning it. Apart from the pilot, the crew members, ground staffs and Air Traffic Control Units also play a great role in determining how the plane flies. Some children are born in Underprivileged families or Marginalized Communities. They can do nothing to change it. But I strongly believe that people with adequate means can surely play an important part in making their lives better. With this commitment to make their lives better, I want to spread the Light of Education among each and every child of such communities. Education can be their weapon for upliftment. " Millennium Fellowship Project: Cancer Agaahi When it comes to diseases, people often say prevention is better than cure. But our question is, how can we expect people to prevent something they remain unaware of? Agaahi is an Urdu word that means ‘awareness’. Our project aims to advance SDG 3 by spreading information through workshops and dialogues regarding different types of cancers, their early detection, and treatments to the rural and urban population of Sindh. Based on the most recent cancer statistics, the highest mortality in Pakistan is due to breast and oral cavity cancer. Breast cancer is a potentially curable disease if its signs and symptoms are detected early on. However, due to the social taboo associated with discussing breast-related issues, women often find out about the devastating disease when it’s too late. In contrast to breast cancer, oral cancer is highly preventable. The reason behind its high occurrence is the use of tobacco products. Therefore, the measurable goals of Project Cancer Agaahi are: 1) To organize awareness workshops in collaboration with hospitals/NGOs. 2) To promote cancer awareness using social media. 3) To collect donations through online donation boxes. The proceeds from the donations will go to cancer hospitals and to fund the physical workshops.
