Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar College of Engineering | Chennai, India | Advancing SDG 17 & UNAI 9 | Emerging Technologist Millennium Fellowship Project: CampusCarpool - Empowering Safe and Sustainable Travel In today's fast-paced world, the need for efficient, safe, and cost-effective transportation is paramount. This is particularly true for students residing on the outskirts of Chennai, where commuting to the city center, Central Railway Station, or the airport can be both challenging and expensive. In response to these challenges, we've developed CampusCarpool, a simple and effective solution to make commuting safer, more economical, and environmentally friendly for students. In the midst of Chennai's bustling streets and vibrant culture, CampusCarpool aims to facilitate connections among students heading in the same direction. It's more than just a ride-sharing app; it's about making daily commutes a shared experience, reducing costs, and contributing to a more sustainable lifestyle. CampusCarpool is purposefully designed with the unique needs of our college community in mind. Recognizing the distinct challenges faced by students residing on the outskirts of Chennai, the app is crafted to cater specifically to their commuting requirements. The initial focus is on fostering a sense of intra-college collaboration, enabling students to connect with their peers who share similar travel destinations. The app's functionality is finely tuned to align with the academic calendar and common travel patterns of our student body. Whether it's heading to the railway station or airport during holidays or commuting to shared destinations for exams, conferences, hackathons, or concerts, CampusCarpool streamlines these specific needs. By tailoring the app to the immediate community, we aim to create a tightly knit network of users who can rely on each other for safe and cost-effective transportation. The app addresses the safety concerns associated with night travel by providing a secure platform for female students to coordinate rides with their peers. This targeted approach ensures that the benefits of CampusCarpool resonate most profoundly within our college community, creating a reliable and trusted network of students who can collectively enhance their travel experiences. As CampusCarpool establishes itself within our college, it lays the foundation for a more connected and supportive community, one that transcends academic pursuits and extends into the practicalities of daily life. By initially tailoring the app to the students of our college, we aim to build a strong foundation for future expansion and the integration of additional features that could benefit an even broader audience. UNITED NATIONS ACADEMIC IMPACT AND MCN PROUDLY PRESENT KIARA KAIZAD DRIVER, A MILLENNIUM FELLOW FOR THE CLASS OF 2022. Ashoka University | Sonipat, India | Advancing SDG 3 & UNAI 3 " One conversation with someone whose life has been forever altered by the Covid 19 pandemic has been ingrained in my mind. The foundation of my project is based on this very conversation that pushed me to think about the ways in which information can be disseminated in this age of pseudoscience and misinformation. Being a Millennium Fellow gives me an opportunity to learn with my peers, working on a project that can only be realised by the collaborative effort of people who want to change the world with their incredible ideas. " Millennium Fellowship Project: The Covid Literacy Project This pandemic has brought on a wave of pseudoscience- information that falsely claims to be based on the scientific method. I want to target and dismantle this very institution of pseudoscience that exists in my university and the town of Asawarpur that is near my university. The first stage of my project would entail gathering information to assess the extent to which people, particularly the residents of the rural town and the housekeeping staff (who we respectfully call didis and bhaiyas) have misunderstood facts about the Covid-19 pandemic. Then I aim to find out the sources of this misinformation and compile all this data to figure out how this can be prevented. Finally, my last stage would entail me holding sessions where I talk to them about my findings, having dialogue with them on the sources of the misinformation that has threatened their good health over the past two years. I would also like to publish a manual detailing my findings generally on the nature of pseudoscience and specifically connecting it to this situation. TKM College of Engineering | Kollam, India | Advancing SDG 4 & UNAI 3 Millennium Fellowship Project: The School Intervention Programme Our project was a long term action focussing the High School students and children sheltered in various orphanages and other backward schools in the district of Kollam. The prime aim of the programme was to offer the under 18 students, an introduction to the new world of education providing them with special capacity building and career guidance training sessions which was organised and co-ordinated by us. We aimed to make the rising youth aware of the plethora of opportunities before them like scholarships, better educational ambience, removing their Anxiety through various skill empowering activities. We also helped them enhance their hidden traits and talents. we assisted the students to know and realise "How to Learn" rather than What to Learn. We helped to introduce a spark among the students, the necessity for being a socially-committed person. Our project was focused on SDG number four which was Quality Education. Education facilitates quality learning which would help us develop our skills and knowledge. The school intervention program was focused on teaching the students to learn rather than study. Our team members visited Inspire Study Centre situated in Punalur for implementing our project. We met very talented and unique students who have dreams but were unaware of the path towards achieving them. We split into groups and focused our attention on specific students. All of us spent time in getting to know them and understanding their thought process. It was not just a learning experience for them but for us as well. Creating a trustful bond between the students was an important task. After getting to know each and every one of them we were able to guide them in the right direction towards achieving their goals. For those who were unclear about their future, we were able to open their minds to the countless opportunities awaiting them.. All in all, rather than taking it up as a project, it was a really developing process for all those involved. The educational institutions that we visited for our project had many talented young minds with plenty of dreams. But these children had many obstacles that they had to overcome. Some of them had issues at home, some had financial issues and for some, they were an obstacle to themselves. Through this meeting, our main aim was to get to know these children- their strengths, weaknesses and every issue that could be solved by us. After talking to them, we understood that they were very ambitious for their age but most of them had issues, which could be solved if we just spent a few hours of our time with them. After this visit, we all made the collective decision that we would continue this project even after the fellowship and we will make sure that each of the children that we met that day will surely achieve all their dreams. " Millennium Fellowship Project: Bridging the Gap The "Bridging the Gap" project represents a pioneering educational initiative that tackles societal disparities through two complementary approaches. This comprehensive project combines international diplomatic education with localized technological innovation to create meaningful educational change at multiple levels. At its core, the project's first component revolutionizes Model United Nations (MUN) education by bridging the gap between simulation and real-world impact. Through UCLMUN Edition X, the initiative has transformed traditional MUN experiences into vehicles for tangible social change. This transformation manifests through charitable giving mechanisms, practical engagement with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and expanded access to diplomatic education across 47 countries. The program has achieved remarkable growth, with a 55.2% increase in participation engaging over 283 delegates. It features eight specialized committees addressing critical global issues, complemented by expert speaker sessions, real-time crisis simulations, and an innovative Press Committee providing journalism experience. Partnerships with over 80 stakeholders and sponsors have strengthened the program's reach and sustainability. The second component addresses educational inequalities in rural China through the innovative integration of technology and modern teaching methodologies. This initiative empowers educators with AI-integrated teaching methods and multimedia tools, transforming traditional classrooms into dynamic learning environments. By leveraging existing infrastructure and students' personal electronic devices, the program creates engaging, interactive learning experiences while building essential media literacy skills. Through specialized workshops and ongoing support, teachers develop proficiency in using technology effectively, leading to more inclusive and engaging classroom environments. " Millennium Fellowship Project: EcoSave The ocean, which makes up 72% of the surface of the globe and is home to a wide variety of marine life, is the planet's life force. At least half of the oxygen we breathe comes from it, and it is essential for regulating our climate. They also contribute significantly to the global economy, which includes sectors like tourism, international shipping, and fisheries. The ocean is currently dealing with several problems, one of which is plastic pollution. More than five trillion pieces of plastic waste are present in the water. UNITED NATIONS ACADEMIC IMPACT AND MCN PROUDLY PRESENT ANIRUDH SURESH, A MILLENNIUM FELLOW AND CAMPUS DIRECTOR FOR THE CLASS OF 2019. Harvard University | Massachusetts, United States | Advancing SDG 4 & UNAI 4 " I can't wait to learn how to best promote the goals and vision I value so much in my initiatives, and I think the Millennium Fellowship will help me in that, both through active learning and informal education via the others around me. " Millennium Fellowship Project: WorldMUN Accessibility For the last two years, I have been part of Harvard WorldMUN, a Harvard undergraduate group that runs the annual World Model United Nations conference—the world’s most internationally diverse Model UN conference. Featuring delegates from 110+ countries in a different city every March, WorldMUN aims to expand intellectual horizons while maintaining its core mission of increasing cross-cultural communication and understanding to instill a sense of global citizenship in participants. In terms of sheer numbers though, representation tends to be skewed toward wealthier and more experienced university delegations, particularly from Europe, the Americas, and Australia. To address this, I have been working along with the rest of the executive organizing team (Secretariat) to provide outreach, recruitment, and information about our team’s increasingly focused initiatives on financial aid and introductory training to underrepresented regions and university delegations. In particular, I have focused on South Asia and Southeast Asia, given my background in these regions/cultures, by reaching out to friends, professors, and college students with resources and informal training. I’ve taken special effort to conduct outreach to universities without a MUN footprint, in the hopes that by WorldMUN 2020, we will see tangible representational impacts in previously unexposed delegations and regions. There are three major geographical regions from which we see significantly lower representation at conference—Africa, South and Southeast Asia, and Oceania. Larger universities in the first two tend to have active delegations or MUN societies, whereas Oceania lacks many large MUN delegations active in international competition. I aim to evaluate impact via this project in terms of different measures for these two categories. For each of Africa and South/Southeast Asia, I intend to recruit at least 2 new delegations and/or 20 individual delegates from each region for WorldMUN 2020. Depending on where the conference will end up taking place (which will be determined by May 2019), we may expand our goal to more delegations/delegates (for example, if conference were determined to take place close to one of these regions, thereby making it easier for delegations from that region to attend). Moreover, I aim to develop relationships with students at least 2 universities without active MUN delegations in each region in the hopes of encouraging development of active competitive international relations societies and eventual representation at WorldMUN. Of course, there are also potential delegates and delegations that face difficulty in coming to conference from more represented parts of the world, including Europe and the Americas. The goal here will be to add at least two delegations and/or 20 individual delegates from previously underrepresented countries/universities in these more historically represented regions. Our financial aid budget each year is above 60,000 USD, but I think that we can improve our application and allocation process. In particular, we could do well to apportion off about 5,000-10,000 USD strictly for new delegations in need. We would also include prior experience in WorldMUN conferences as a factor for financial aid decisions, prioritizing in general first-time delegations in need in order to spur forward representation. Though such provisions have been discussed in the past, it has never been implemented as a result of uncertainty regarding number and need of new delegations. However, with a renewed and focused push to incorporate more new delegations, I believe such a move could help support and sustain new delegations that could become integrated into the WorldMUN spirit—and, by extension, the broader competitive international relations community. The Millennium Fellowship programme creates an ecosystem where student leaders globally can inspire and support each other, magnifying the impact each person can bring to the table. I am honoured to be given the chance to be part of that ecosystem. " Millennium Fellowship Project: Project Tote As the world drowns in plastic, Project Tote aims to reduce plastic consumption by encouraging the use of reusable carriers, specifically tote bags, when shopping. The two biggest issues in London are leeways in regulations against small grocery stores and the fact that some shoppers just forget to bring their reusable bags, or do an unplanned shopping trip, thus having to buy plastic bags. To combat this, Project Tote aims to build tote bag stations at residences or inside small grocery stores for people to borrow or donate tote bags with zero hassle! Through advertisements and notes, the project also aims to raise awareness on the importance of cutting single use plastic. The measurable goal by end of 2019 is to set up 3 tote bag stations, starting with the area in Elephant and Castle. UNITED NATIONS ACADEMIC IMPACT AND MCN PROUDLY PRESENT HALLELUYAH OLUDELE, A MILLENNIUM FELLOW FOR THE CLASS OF 2023. University of Ibadan University College Hospital | Ibadan, Nigeria | Advancing SDG 4 & UNAI 3 Millennium Fellowship Project: Her Life Matters Considering the enormity of my initial project, I have decided to partner with Hallelujah a friend and millennium to combat the gross lack of information regarding cervical cancer incidence and prevention to young girls in my immediate community (Ibadan, Nigeria). I'm going to be working on the MDG 6 which is to combat malaria, HIV/AIDS and other diseases. cervical cancer is on the rise now and it is the second highest cause of cancer deaths among women, after breast cancer. The surprising part is that it is preventable and curable if diagnosed on time. One of the preventive measures is by abstinence, keeping a good sexual life, and HPV vaccination at least by the time young girls are leaving secondary school. Because this project will be encouraging women, young girls in particular to be intentional about their health, it'll also empower women, hence fulfilling the MDG 4 (promote gender equality and empower women) As part of my project, I will work on sensitizing young girls on what cervical cancer is and also bringing about the knowledge of the vaccines to them. One problem that may be faced by the government in organizing mass vaccination is inefficient planning. In a bid to help the government, data will be collected in the sensitization programs which I will organize and it will be analysed to provide the government with valuable insights on mass screening exercises. I'll also be communicating the results to various NGOs who havw the capacity to organise these screening programs. I look forward to organising a team and working on this project. Our hope is too reach about 100-150 young females in secondary schools scattered around our community and hopefully recommend/partner with cervical cancer screening and vaccination organisations interested in our cause . Only he can control how the plane of your life takes off. None of us have control in how we take birth or how we die." - This is a quote which I heard long back; and I kept questioning it. Apart from the pilot, the crew members, ground staffs and Air Traffic Control Units also play a great role in determining how the plane flies. Some children are born in Underprivileged families or Marginalized Communities. They can do nothing to change it. But I strongly believe that people with adequate means can surely play an important part in making their lives better. With this commitment to make their lives better, I want to spread the Light of Education among each and every child of such communities. Education can be their weapon for upliftment.
