Poorvikha is a bundle of contradictions- she can go from being childlike and giggly to serene and wise beyond her years . She is unrelenting when it comes to achieving her goals and has the commitment and discipline to take any initiative to conclusion . As a future doctor , her vision is to make significant contributions to clinical research that will revolutionise patient care and effect positive change the world over . I am not delusional enough to believe that I alone can herald seismic change in the world we live in . But collaboratively and in small increments , discernible change can be brought about . The Fellowship for me is about networking with driven , likeminded individuals , an opportunity to broaden my horizons and assimilate fresher opinions so that I can be the best version of myself, for others. " Millennium Fellowship Project: Clothes For A Change Clothes for a Change was brainstormed after identifying the amount of usable clothes that have been thrown out once students / young adults have either shifted rooms or have left the hostel. Our vision: To see that we reduce wastage annually, and therefore be able to provide clothes for as many underprivileged people in Bengaluru. Our mission: To persuade more students to understand the importance of donation and sustainable consumption in relation to clothing and encourage giving back to society and uplift those below the poverty line. Additionally , we aimed to optimise awareness about poverty , inequity and the environment being social determinants of health . Our methodology: Every year College students begin with X number of clothes. By the end of year, we are left with X+Y clothes, only to buy another Z number of clothes for the upcoming year and then not wear the old ones ever again. Instead, we believe we can set up cloth donation boxes on every floor of the hostel, collect as many clothes, bedsheets, cloth covers, shoes as possible every 2-3 months, and donate it to charities and orphanages in and around Bengaluru. College clothes mostly comprise of kurtis which a lot of us students are unlikely to re-wear on a long-term basis. Hence donation is the perfect way to ensure they don’t go to waste. Those below the poverty line cannot afford basic clothing or bedsheets to cover themselves especially in the cold weather on the streets, hence these clothes would mean a lot for them. Within our hospital campus itself, next to kin of patients usually wait outside and sleep on the pavements nearby, for whom these clothes and bedsheets would be of great help. Our job would be to ensure the given clothes are in good condition, have been ironed and neatly kept for the recipients. For this we collaborated with the Medico Social Worker department at St John's Hostipal , Bangalore ,India . About the Millennium Fellow Poorvikha is a bundle of contradictions- she can go from being childlike and giggly to serene and wise beyond her years . It aims at educating the public on the causes, prevention of asthma triggers, and proper management involved in asthma care thus enhancing and improving the quality of life of asthma patients. Asthma is a major Non-communicable disease(NCD) that has been identified also as a global burden being the most common chronic disease among children. According to the World Health Organization(WHO), asthma affected an estimated 262 000 000 people in 2019 and caused 461 000 deaths. AAMi would help to reduce the global burden arising from the impact of Non-communicable diseases. This would be achieved through sustainable education on the proper way to curtail and erase asthma triggers, attacks, and deaths. The project would prioritize hosting awareness programs within the University of Nigeria which would educate about 1000 students of faculty of pharmaceutical sciences and faculty of social science on the importance of early asthma diagnosis and adequate management of the condition. It would buttress the importance of a healthy lifestyle as a key asthma management technique and also correct the various misconceptions that the students have about asthma. There would be a training session where participants would be trained on how to manage an asthmatic patient in the case of an asthmatic attack. The AAMi project members would collaborate with a specialist in asthma care and pioneer of the Asthma Awareness and Care Group(AACG), and other social health and public health groups on campus to achieve the aim of the project. My passion for peace, justice, and strong institutions fuels my commitment to using technology to uplift communities. This fellowship empowers me to turn ideas into impactful actions, creating a ripple effect for a fairer, more resilient world. " Millennium Fellowship Project: Peace,Justice And Institution The project, "Okoa Boy Child, Imarisha Girl Child," was inspired by the need to promote peace, justice, and strong institutions by advocating for equitable care and empowerment of both boys and girls in society. While tremendous progress has been made in empowering the girl child, this initiative recognizes that a balanced approach is essential for sustainable development and societal harmony. Neglecting the boy child can inadvertently create social inequalities that hinder progress toward achieving peace and justice. The project seeks to shift narratives and call for nations, communities, and institutions to extend deliberate care and empowerment programs to boys while continuing efforts to uplift girls. Through awareness campaigns, dialogues, and community workshops, the initiative emphasizes the interconnectedness of both genders in building a peaceful and prosperous society. "Okoa Boy Child, Imarisha Girl Child" is a platform for discussing critical issues such as mental health challenges, educational opportunities, and social pressures faced by boys while reinforcing the importance of empowering girls. By fostering mutual understanding and inclusivity, the project aims to dismantle stereotypes, reduce gender-based disparities, and nurture a generation of empowered individuals who contribute to peace, justice, and strong institutions. This initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 5: Gender Equality and SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions). It underscores that true societal progress can only be achieved when both boys and girls are given equal opportunities to thrive and contribute meaningfully to their communities. About the Millennium Fellow Okumu Emmanuel is a Software Engineering student at Kisii University and a recent Millennium Fellow committed to advancing peace, justice, and strong institutions.
