UNITED NATIONS ACADEMIC IMPACT AND MCN PROUDLY PRESENT NICHELE OLIVIA-LANETT WASHINGTON, A MILLENNIUM FELLOW FOR THE CLASS OF 2024. Spelman College | Georgia, United States | Advancing SDG 3 & UNAI 6 " I was born to a woman who fought for her dreams. Though she frequently reminded my siblings and I that we were, in fact, her greatest dream, it wasn't until I reached college that I began to understand that our existence was something she had to fight for as well. Within the United States, Black women are 2.5x more likely to die during childbirth than their non-Hispanic, White counterparts. This statistic and others like it have many causes ranging from a lack of access to quality health care to limited post-partum care. However, no matter the cause, what remains true is that the maternal mortality landscape within the United States is in need of rectification– I want to help bring this about. Four times, my mother survived the everyday miracle of childbirth. Out of my love for her, I am making it my responsibility to ensure that other women do too. " Millennium Fellowship Project: CARE (Collegiate Advocates for Reproductive Equity) Collegiate Advocates for Reproductive Equity (CARE) is a multi-faceted, intercampus project designed to bring awareness to and rectify the inequitable reproductive landscape. While reproductive equity is an umbrella term, this project is unique in that its main objective is to aid in the improvement of the maternal health landscape. With a multi-legged approach consisting of a donation drive for expecting mothers and doulas, a letter writing campaign to local politicians, and a webinar inviting professionals in the field to impart their knowledge, this project encourages us to care about maternal health equity so that we can change the material conditions of marginalized mothers and birthing people. Seeing how the worst Black maternal mortality rates belong to Southern states, this project is positioned in the heart of the problem, giving us the unique ability to make a direct difference in the communities that need it the most. By partnering with other like-minded organizations in the South, we hope to create a place in undergraduate academia where students with a passion for maternal equity can get involved. He is currently a 200 level student of Economics and statistics in the Renowned University of Benin, Benin city, Edo state; Nigeria. ABOUT THE MILLENNIUM FELLOWSHIP - CLASS OF 2020 United Nations Academic Impact and MCN are proud to partner on the Millennium Fellowship. The Class of 2020 is bold, innovative, and inclusive. UNITED NATIONS ACADEMIC IMPACT AND MCN PROUDLY PRESENT DANIEL CHIDIEBERE EDOCHIE, A MILLENNIUM FELLOW FOR THE CLASS OF 2020. University of Benin | Benin City, Nigeria | Advancing SDG 4 & UNAI 3 " First of all, I thank MCN, UNAI, and past Millennium Fellows that have been working hand in gloves to ensure that the SDGs are realized. I also use this opportunity to congratulate all 2020 Millennium Fellows that had being admitted thus far. To the question on why am excited to be a member of the Millennium Fellowship, I will say, that the opportunity the MCN platform offers to social impactors and potential leaders is the major reason behind my excitement. This opportunity which comes in form of a very wide coverage, ease of accessing requisite tools(of which information is a key component) and the large pool of knowledge and intellectual minds that are present in this platform are unarguably scarce. Thus it will not just assist me to achieve my social impact goals, but also instill in me some qualities and skills of leadership that will surely come handy in my future social impact endeavours. On why I do what I do, I will say I do what I do because I see it as a way to give back to the society and also because I love doing so. " Millennium Fellowship Project: Quality education My project is about reaching out to children of school age or pupils and students alike who might had been opportuned to attend a public school, but know little or nothing about the impact or consequences of the academic choices they make as it pertains to maximizing the quality of education obtainable in a third world country such as ours, in order for them to have a brighter future. This I will do in collaboration with other millennium fellows, by productively engaging students and pupils of selected public schools in my locality. With regards to the measurability of my goals to be accomplished within the stipulated time of August to December, I will say that giving or stating figures of people that will be impacted by my project at this point in time will be herculean. This is so because of the disruption of academic activities by the Corona virus pandemic. As stated in some of my previous write ups, my target audience are children of school age, so the ban on gathering will surely affect my earlier estimates off 500-900. Though I decided to go virtual, but structural and infrastructural problems will surely reduce the population of my audience; this is so, because majority of my target audience lack the technological gadgets needed for virtual learning. Not to mention the high cost of data subscriptions and that of epileptic and in some cases no power supply. Be that as it may, there is every possibility that more than 100 lives will be impacted within this timeframe. That's why I am interested to be a Millennium Fellow. " Millennium Fellowship Project: Green Campus Various canteens, cafeterias and street food vans on the Dhaka University campus mainly use plastic in serving food. Tea shops in TSC, the most populous area of the university, use plastic in serving tea. As a result, even though a lot of plastic is used on campus every day, it is not possible to ensure its recycling, which is having a huge impact on our environment. Through my project I will be collaborating with various campus shop owners and university administrations through seminars or workshops to explain the environmental damage caused by the plastics they use. I will work at the policy level to ensure that the university administration introduces rules for the use of eco-friendly products like paper cups, jute bags instead of plastic. The campus environment is changing as trees are being cut down on a large scale for various development works at the university. I will continue the tree planting program to build a green campus. - Shubhangi Sharma | National University of Study and Research in Law
Shubhangi Sharma is a penultimate year law student at National University of Study and Research in Law, Ranchi. Being born and brought up in the tribal state of Jharkhand, she has been passionate about working for a social cause and bring changes in the tribal state of Jharkhand. She is very much focused about the sexual and reproductive health rights of women of tribal regions of Jharkhand. She would indulge herself to create awareness among the masses. The life of tribal women is so pathetic and poignant that she seriously want to work and come out with results for this cause. She is good at working in the survey and statistics department along with research work for the social causes. Finding out the numbers will help her to know how much can she address the masses and doing extensive research work will help her to know the problems in depth and how to resolve it. It would also help her to create awareness along with it she would be able to compare the state of Jharkhand with other states who had this problem but now is living a healthy and happy life. In short, the comparison, extensive research work, finding out the statics are the strenghts of her. She took law as a carrer so that these above mentioned tools can be used for the betterment of the society. ABOUT THE MILLENNIUM FELLOWSHIP - CLASS OF 2022 United Nations Academic Impact and MCN are proud to partner on the Millennium Fellowship. UNITED NATIONS ACADEMIC IMPACT AND MCN PROUDLY PRESENT SHUBHANGI SHARMA, A MILLENNIUM FELLOW AND CAMPUS DIRECTOR FOR THE CLASS OF 2022. National University of Study and Research in Law | Ranchi, India | Advancing SDG 3 & UNAI 6 " I am deeply committed to advancing the concept of sexual and reproductive health and rights, which are widely considered taboo in Indian society. I believe that being selected as a Millennium Fellow is a significant step toward achieving my goal. The platform will give me much-needed exposure and a global stage to perform and can sow the seeds of the future change I desire " Millennium Fellowship Project: Project Samman: Our Body Our Right Our project basically focuses on sexual and reproductive health rights of women of tribal region of Jharkhand. India is a country where more than fifty percent of the world’s population reside. Jharkhand which is one of the backward states in eastern India occupies a distinct place in the tribal map of the country having one of the largest numbers of tribal communities. Since these tribal groups are deprived of the basic facilities that they should get in order to sustain a good healthy life. The main problem that the tribal people face are poverty and exploitation, economically and technologically backwardness, socio cultural handicaps, illiteracy and many more. The focus of the project would be basically on the unawareness about sexual and reproductive health right among tribal women of Jharkhand. Since the tribal people are not able to maintain the sexual and reproductive health right so our project would deal with awareness among the masses. Social vulnerabilities remain as a result of gender stereotypes, early stoppage, early marriage and teenage pregnancy. The tribal people are not able to achieve the standard of sexual and reproductive health. They are not able to decide freely about the number, spacing and timing of their children. They are not physically, mentally and socially balanced and lacks access to medical, mental and social facilities. There are cases of sexually transmitted diseases because of improper hygiene. Yeast infection, pelvic infections caused by bacteria naturally live in the vagina. There is no proper consultant or care taker to talk about these matters in these tribal areas even the women are not comfortable in sharing their problems related to their own body. There is no proper sex education imparted which is worry some. They are not aware about the contraceptive uses and hence they lack proper family planning and since they are already poor it makes the family more deprived and malnourished. The life of tribal women is so pathetic and poignant that I seriously want to work and come out with results for this cause. For this the project is going to work on three parameters: 1) Extensive field research- by visiting the local areas of tribal people 2) Awareness campaigns- by poster making, use of social media, conducting seminars. 3) Compilation of study report and sending it to government authorities.
