New York University Shanghai | Shanghai, China | Advancing SDG 4 & UNAI 3 Millennium Fellowship Project: They Deserve More Promising Futures We noticed that children in migrant families in Shanghai suffer from a shortage of education not only because of restricted educational access but also left behind due of an information gap in terms of what ways they could choose after middle school graduation and what materials they need to enter higher education. We find that with our leadership skills to organize students, abilities to research policies, access to more professional information and guidance, and valid connections with NGOs and experts, we could devote ourselves to supporting these students with their future planning after we obtain training from NYU Shanghai's Center for career development. We delve into the dilemma facing migrant students in junior high schools in Shanghai, to find out the mechanism that has created such a dilemma and try to generate some practical solutions. It looks into current policies and existing resources scattered among local schools, government-supported programs, and non-profit organizations. There are currently no channels where this population can access aggregated information and recourses, which further adds an obstacle to their future planning. Therefore, The comprehensive report analyzes the current educational status of these populations which at the same time serves as a resource pack for educational experts’ or NGO fellows’ future reference. We anticipate that the NGO, NYUshanghai, and the Foundation will collaborate to create a platform that offers long-term volunteer training, counseling on career planning, and networking opportunities with migrant worker families. We expect a sustainable helping platform to always be available even when faced with global crises like COVID-19. The increasing absorption of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere by the ocean is leading to a decrease in seawater pH, a phenomenon known as ocean acidification. This change in ocean chemistry poses significant threats to marine ecosystems, particularly those that support coastal communities. Project Goal: To assess the potential impacts of ocean acidification on marine biodiversity, fisheries, and coastal livelihoods. Project Objectives: 1. Understand the science of ocean acidification: Investigate the current state of ocean acidification in Ghanaian waters, including pH trends, carbonate chemistry, and potential future scenarios. 2. Assess the vulnerability of marine species: Evaluate the sensitivity of key commercial and ecologically important species (e.g., fish, shellfish, corals) to ocean acidification. 3. Investigate the socio-economic impacts: Examine the potential consequences of ocean acidification on fisheries production, coastal livelihoods, and food security in Ghana. 4. Develop adaptation strategies: Explore potential adaptation and mitigation strategies to address the challenges posed by ocean acidification in the Ghanaian context. Project Activities: 1. Conduct literature reviews on ocean acidification and its impacts in the region. 2. Collect and analyze data on oceanographic parameters, marine biodiversity, and fisheries landings. 3. Conduct interviews with fishers, aquaculture farmers, and other stakeholders to understand their perceptions and experiences. 4. Develop and implement a monitoring program to track changes in ocean chemistry and marine ecosystems. 5. Organize workshops and outreach activities to raise awareness about ocean acidification and its implications. Expected Outcomes: 1. A comprehensive understanding of the potential impacts of ocean acidification on marine ecosystems and coastal communities in Ghana. 2. Recommendations for adaptation and mitigation strategies to address the challenges posed by ocean acidification. 3. Increased awareness and understanding of ocean acidification among policymakers, stakeholders, and the general public. Project Timeline: Phase 1: Literature review and data collection (6 months) Phase 2: Data analysis and impact assessment (6 months) Phase 3: Development of adaptation strategies and outreach (6 months) Project Team: The project team will consist of marine scientists, social scientists, economists, and other relevant experts.
