  • Claire Makuyana | Ashesi University

Claire Chaseya Makuyana is a creative global citizen passionate about bringing quality education opportunities to low-income students from Zimbabwe. Claire is a Zimbabwean by birth, but she is currently pursuing a Computer Engineering Bachelors degree at Ashesi University in Ghana. While growing up, Claire grew up surrounded by economic hardships, and one of the few ways to make it in life was to study abroad and attain high paying jobs there. Unfortunately, most people who managed to acquire fully paid scholarships and highly paid overseas jobs never returned to their home country. They never returned to give back to their societies or assist other Zimbabwean students with knowledge on how to tackle study abroad opportunities. Hence, when she attained a fully paid MasterCard Scholarship at Ashesi University, Claire made it her goal to use the experience and knowledge she attained while applying for study abroad opportunities to help other students back in Zimbabwe. Since then, It has been her mission to support the fourth Sustainable Development Goal of providing quality education. Hence, I am looking forward to attaining soft and hard skills from my upcoming experience as a Millennium Fellow and use the knowledge to provide social impact to my community and Africa. " Millennium Fellowship Project: IshangoPlus Most students in rural areas lack knowledge about the variety of opportunities (both academics and non-academic) available to them after graduation. The project is divided into two main parts and also has a minor feature which would be a podcast. The first part of the project involves organizing campaigns and visiting schools in remote rural areas in Ghana to enlighten high school students from these schools about the opportunities and programs available to high school students. The Ashesi team will walk them through what they have to do to be fully equipped with the necessary skills to be entitled to these opportunities. The second part of the problem involves organizing a 3-month mentorship program between high school students from rural areas with student volunteers from universities worldwide. The mentor-mentee pairing will be done considering the students' career aspirations. Through this mentorship program, the students will learn from their seniors who went through the process before them. They will be able to gain guidance concerning their path after high school graduation. The podcast would focus on having talks with student entrepreneurs. This would be to discuss how these entrepreneurs came up with their business what inspires them and advice they would give to other students. The Ashesi team sees this as a necessary feature of the project because we would not want students to have the only focus of graduating and finding work. However, we would want some of these students to start up businesses which would intend to employ their mates and reduce the rate of unemployment in the country. Being part of the Millennium Fellowship networks will allow me to meet others with the same motivation and will help me realize my personal and professional goals to improve the world bit by bit" " Millennium Fellowship Project: Tabadol We started our project in early February, when one of our members started communicating with the ISNAD Community Center in Palestine on potentially establishing a “language buddy” relationship via Zoom between students at Sciences Po Menton and those at the community center. Raed Eshnaiwer, the center’s founder and professor at Birzeit University, outlined the need for intercultural connections for Palestinian students, given the fact that many of them never leave the boundaries of their own city. He suggested that not only do we start planning for language tutoring, but also arrange monthly conferences on debates and discussions between Sciences Po and ISNAD CC students. We will be setting up one student at Sciences Po, most of whom learn Arabic as part of the curriculum, with a Palestinian student. They will hold weekly virtual meetings in order to create networks and practice their language skills with each other. While most Sciences Po students will be helping the Palestinian counterparts with English conversational skills, in some cases and according to demand, students will also have the opportunity to improve their French, Spanish, Turkish, German, Japanese, Russian, Persian, Kurdish, and more. In addition, we will hold cultural events such as debates and panels. We have not been able to hold one yet, but we plan to have a discussion on a topic such as the right to education within the next three weeks. Currently, we have finished the first stage of recruiting students interested in the project and are waiting for professor Raed Eshnaiwer to provide us with a student list. We are working with SciencesPo students to solidify interests and linguistic abilities, in order to better pair them with their Palestinian counterparts. We are also promoting our project in order to involve more students in the virtual language exchange and cooperating with the university administration to register our first open-to-all event. Finally, for my part, one of our members, Sami, is currently on the board of Mediterranean Model United Nations, our campus' annual Model UN Conference, the biggest MUN in the Mediterranean region, offering committees in English, French, Spanish, Italian, Arabic, and Turkish. For next year's conference, after speaking with Mr. Eshnaiwer, we are interested in forming a partnership between MEDMUN as an outgrowth of our own organization, spearheaded by Sami. We would offer Model UN masterclasses throughout the year, as many of the students are beginners in MUN, thus giving interested students the opportunity to gain valuable experience in the fields of diplomacy and international relations. " Millennium Fellowship Project: Every YOU Matters Team Millenium Fellows comprising of 9 set off their plans and start their execution in the early fellowship month of August 2022. Our first project was on Career Counselling, it was planned to target the students at our University and the school-going children. To make them aware of the career opportunities available to them and how to get benefited from them. Therefore, millennium fellows decided to do that job first. For that, we divide the topics among ourselves, researched them and prepare the slides. Afterwards, a nearby college for women only named ‘Gov. Jinnah Associate College for Women, Mozang, Lahore’ is reached out to. We went there for permission with an MCN LetterHead. All the journey to make a change in our surroundings. Our second project was on health issues. So, being medical students, what would be more concerning us than addressing the health challenges and concerns prevailing in our daily lives? Therefore, we’ve decided to opt for the highly discussed and less cited topic of the day, Planetary Health, a multidisciplinary approach to address climate change, the biggest challenge of the twenty-first century. We have planned to organise the workshop titled Planetary Health for All PH4A in our university for medical students so that they know what this topic is about. With some handful of activities on how to use the 3 R’s (Reduce, Reuse & Recycle) in their lives that workshop is planned to be executed. However, our main target audience is medical students of our university, so we can create Planetary Health awareness for future healthcare leaders and have a long-lasting effect for the years ahead. I was impressed by what this organization stands for and even during the application process, which is the very beginning of this journey, I felt that I was one step closer to my goals. Also, I believe that the impact a person can create on her own is very limited. Millennium Fellowship is a great opportunity for me to work collaboratively with others, become a part of a global community, and gain skills to create more solid, creative, and sustainable social impact projects. " Millennium Fellowship Project: Omerdeyim: Student Portal Omerdeyim: Student Portal is a website to gather a community for sharing lecture notes, tutoring, socializing and studying together. As the pandemic caused students to have weaker connections with their academic life, limited their social relations and diminished their motivation we detected the need for an online social center. Through omerdeyim.com, anyone who desires to learn can collaborate on enhancing the standards of their learning process. The project aimed to develop the educational standards during the pandemics, as online education is both a challenge and an opportunity for the learning environment. By creating a website that is designed to share notes, educational links, tutor/teacher advice, course feedback etc. and meet to study together and support each other online mentally and motivationally. By the help of Millennium Fellowship, we are planning to extend the scale of the platform and aim to reach more people motivated to study whether they are university students or someone that aims to grow his/her knowledge on the available content hopefully within August-December 2021.
