" Millennium Fellowship Project: Cancer Agaahi When it comes to diseases, people often say prevention is better than cure. But our question is, how can we expect people to prevent something they remain unaware of? Agaahi is an Urdu word that means ‘awareness’. Our project aims to advance SDG 3 by spreading information through workshops and dialogues regarding different types of cancers, their early detection, and treatments to the rural and urban population of Sindh. Based on the most recent cancer statistics, the highest mortality in Pakistan is due to breast and oral cavity cancer. Breast cancer is a potentially curable disease if its signs and symptoms are detected early on. However, due to the social taboo associated with discussing breast-related issues, women often find out about the devastating disease when it’s too late. In contrast to breast cancer, oral cancer is highly preventable. The reason behind its high occurrence is the use of tobacco products. Therefore, the measurable goals of Project Cancer Agaahi are: 1) To organize awareness workshops in collaboration with hospitals/NGOs. 2) To promote cancer awareness using social media. 3) To collect donations through online donation boxes. The proceeds from the donations will go to cancer hospitals and to fund the physical workshops. " Millennium Fellowship Project: The Other Side of Camera Cinema has an unparalleled ability to mirror reality, to provoke thought, and to quietly ignite revolutions in the minds of its audience. The Other Side of Camera is not merely a project; it is an inquiry into the silences that permeate our society. Inspired by the powerful storytelling in films like The Great Indian Kitchen, this initiative seeks to peel back the layers of invisibility shrouding the labor, struggles, and systemic injustices faced by marginalized communities—be they women, caste minorities, or tribal populations. This project takes a two-pronged approach: Film Screenings: We will screen a curated selection of films, both regional and international, that grapple with themes of gender, caste, and tribal communities. By showcasing stories in languages such as Marathi, Malayalam, and others, we aim to bridge cultural divides and encourage inclusivity. Post-Screening Discussions: These discussions will serve as spaces of reflection and dialogue, where students can express themselves freely in any language. The objective is to facilitate conversations on topics that are often ignored—intersectionality, invisible labor, prejudice, and systemic inequality—while nurturing diverse perspectives that reflect the plurality of our campus. Digital Repository: To document and amplify these voices, we plan to host interviews with filmmakers—directors, producers, writers, and actors—who will share their creative processes, motivations, and lived experiences. These interviews will be archived digitally, creating a repository of stories that inspire learning and unlearning beyond the confines of the project. Ultimately, The Other Side of Camera is an attempt to use the unassuming medium of cinema to compel its audience to confront the uncomfortable truths of societal inequalities and to foster empathy through dialogue and reflection. By developing skills and working with a community that's driven to advance the UN’s SDGs, I believe that the Fellowship will help translate those critical elements, coupled with passion, into actionable and powerful solutions for disenfranchised populations in urban communities. " Millennium Fellowship Project: Bridging the Gap The democratic promise is one achieved by meaningful civic participation, and where marginalized communities are inadequately advocated for by their representatives, the system has failed. Recognizing the disconnect between representatives and underserved communities, ‘Bridging the Gap’ seeks to eliminate that interruption of the democratic process through a multi-stage approach. By modernizing current civic participation models, adapting traditionally successful schemes to vulnerable populations’ needs, ‘Bridging the Gap’ will hope to gather insights from these populations on issues including public aid and access to justice. And after collection, ‘Bridging the Gap’ will utilize research teams composed of students and academics in the relevant field, to produce an accessible policy report that presents and analyzes stakeholders’ issues in a meaningful manner, with research-guided policy recommendations offered, oriented around being actionable solutions policy-makers can utilize. And finally, ‘Bridging the Gap’ will partner with local/national representatives, but also with external civil society organizations to bring insights onto the discussion table, advocating directly with policy-makers for change on the issues. Furthermore, through live tracking of subsequent work on the issues, and the creation of an accessible checker for relevant parliamentary action, ‘Bridging the Gap’ will hold representatives accountable before the people who elected them. The Millennium Fellowship under The United Nations Academic Impact and the MCN will do wonders for my knowledge and experience, it will help me to integrate environment with social relationships on a global stage " Millennium Fellowship Project: EcoScript Eco-Script is a green purchasing guide/manual containing sustainable alternatives for a lot of products and services used by educational institutions. The reason behind choosing educational institutions as the target for social impact was the fact that these institutions use a lot of resources. Minor changes to their purchasing practices could make a huge difference. Additionally, we felt that students enrolled in these institutions, seeing the positive change will start to incorporate sustainability in their day-to-day life as well. The modules covered in the project include ‘Building and Construction Material’, ‘Paper Products’, ‘Furniture’, ‘Cleaning Supplies’, ‘Heating Ventilating and Cooling Appliances’, ‘I.T. Appliances’, ‘Energy Efficiency Services and Consultancy’, and ‘Renewable Energy on Campus’. Eco-Script addresses two main points which are often left out by other purchasing manuals of a similar kind. Firstly, Eco-Script is tailored for the needs of educational institutions in India and lists sustainable products and services clearly for the reader including a cost-benefit analysis. Secondly, the main issue we found with guides of similar nature was that we couldn’t make out which products exactly are eco-friendly and sustainable. This issue arises due to the abundance of ecolabels and eco marks in the market which confuses the consumer. Therefore, Eco-Script also lists trustworthy ecolabels for each of the modules informing the consumer and make decision-making much easier for educational institutions. For this project, we conducted a survey which concerned questions about fundamental financial understanding like whether people knew the sum breakup of bills or difference between a debit and a credit card , how much they saved, etc. One of the key question was to rate on a scale of 1 to 5 how independent the respondents think they were while making an financial decision. With the average score being 3.02, only 27.28% of female respondents made financial decisions independently compared to 50.53% of male respondents. Cochin University of Science and Technology | Kochi, India | Advancing SDG 4 & UNAI 3 Millennium Fellowship Project: Pages of Progress In the pursuit of fostering the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal of providing quality education, our project, "Pages of Progress," emerges as a beacon of change with a specific focus on positively impacting the age group between 15 and 19. We aimed towards educational enrichment, encompassing a book collection drive and legal awareness sessions. ● Book Collection Drive: Cultivating a Culture of Knowledge Sharing The cornerstone of "Pages of Progress" lies in our commitment to democratizing/improving access to knowledge. To achieve this, we launched a comprehensive book collection drive. The collected books, sourced from diverse genres and academic levels, serve as conduits of knowledge and empowerment. Our mission extends beyond mere accumulation; these books were distributed to the students of an under-resourced government school library, creating a ripple effect of learning opportunities. In this way, we not only address the scarcity of educational resources but also nurture a culture of knowledge sharing and community engagement. ● Legal Awareness Sessions: Illuminating Minds on Crucial Issues Recognizing the transformative power of legal literacy, our project incorporates tailored legal awareness sessions. Covering pivotal subjects such as cybercrimes and fundamental rights, these sessions stand as pillars of enlightenment for the targeted age group. Millennium Fellows of CUSAT cohort take the lead in empowering students with the knowledge to navigate legal landscapes. By explaining/clarifying legal jargon and instilling an understanding of their rights and responsibilities, we foster a generation of informed citizens. Through these sessions, we not only address immediate concerns but also contribute to the broader goal of creating a society where individuals are equipped to advocate for justice and fairness. Thus, through our multifaceted approach, we hope to have sown the seeds of empowerment, education, and enlightenment. Looking ahead, our commitment remains resolute as we navigate the evolving landscape of education and legal awareness, with a vision to foster lasting positive change in the lives of the young minds we touch. "Pages of Progress" stands not only as a project but as a testament to the collective power of communities coming together for a brighter, more educated tomorrow. " Millennium Fellowship Project: You Matter Initiave Most students in rural areas lack knowledge about the variety of opportunities (both academics and non-academic) available to them after graduation. It is divided into two main parts and also has a minor feature which would be a podcast. The first part of the project involves organizing campaigns and visiting schools in remote rural areas in Ghana to enlighten high school students from these schools about the opportunities and programs available to high school students. The Ashesi team will walk them through what they have to do to be fully equipped with the necessary skills to be entitled to these opportunities. The second part of the problem involves organizing a 3-month mentorship program between high school students from rural areas with student volunteers from universities worldwide. The mentor-mentee pairing will be done considering the students' career aspirations. Through this mentorship program, the students will learn from their seniors who when through the process before them. They will be able to gain guidance concerning their path after high school graduation. The podcast would focus on having talks with student entrepreneurs. This would be to discuss how these entrepreneurs came up with their business what inspires them and advice they would give to other students. The Ashesi team sees this as a necessary feature of the project because we would not want students to only focus of graduating and finding work. However, we would want some of these students to start up business which would in tend employ their mates and reduce the rate of unemployment in the country. This project is mainly focused on advancing SDG 4 and promoting the goal 5 of UNAI goals.
