Parwaaz aims to assist the students and society to normalize the discussion of mental health and reduce the stigma associated with it. The purpose of this project is to promote, restore and maintain a positive mental health. According to an estimate of WHO, India has one of the largest populations affected with Mental Illness. The first and the foremost reason for India to have a lowered mental health is the lack of awareness and sensitivity about the issue. To reduce the stigma around mental health, we need to train and sensitize society. This can happen only when we put in concentrated efforts to educate the society about mental health diseases. There is a need for teenagers and adolescents to be aware of mental health topics that affect their peers and community as well as resources for how to see help. It is important to cultivate practices that support emotional well-being. When mental health is overlooked, it can have detrimental effects on the individual and the community. For this cause, Parwaaz is determined to spread awareness by arranging workshops, counseling sessions etc. We at Parwaaz try to help people to recognize symptoms of mental health diseases and try to connect them to a counselor or therapist. Thus, dedicating efforts to make people realize the fact that mental health is as important as physical health. And I associate these principles with my favorite quote: “The strength of the wolf is the pack, and the strength of the pack is the wolf.” I think that for a group to efficiently perform and effectively execute a task, it is crucial to have good communication and coordination between the leader and his members. More important than having the brightest members is good team dynamics which must be established through the leader’s initiative. A good leader embodying the change in his own ways will gain followers who will believe in the same idea and hand-in-hand help each other to achieve such goal. The skills I will gain in Millennium Fellowship program will help me become a better person who can spearhead the change that our chosen community needs. " Millennium Fellowship Project: Isang Manwal sa Pagtatanim ng Palay Philippines is an agricultural nation where almost 40 percent of the workforce in the country engages in agriculture. Rice farming is one of the backbones of agriculture in this country. According to the Philippine Statistics Authority, Palay output in 2020 was posted at 19.32 million metric tons. Yet, there are numerous problems concerning rice farming in the Philippines primarily involving the unsteady percentage of yield of the different varieties of rice produced per region. This can be caused by inconsistent practices being applied by the farmers. This is supported by the recent study of the Department of Agriculture where among the said problems is the lack of information dissemination. Through the Millennium Fellowship, we want to address this issue as it connects to three of the seventeen sustainable development goals set by United Nations, namely SDGs 1, 4, and 10.” A material from IRRI which talks about how to increase yield in rice was translated to three Filipino languages, so that its knowledge will be more accessible. Through this project, we aimed to equip laypersons with legal knowledge that is useful in daily life by assessing their specific needs in collaboration with local governmental bodies. Since 2016, the Nepalese government has given local bodies the power to settle disputes through mediation. The Local Judicial Committee, in particular, has this ability. For this project, we will be working with the Judicial Committee of Sunkoshi Village to assess the needs of residents, and design awareness and training sessions accordingly. The project primarily focused on two actors- the Judicial Committee and the residents. Firstly, since the local committees are constituted by elected representatives who are not necessarily legal experts, we conducted training and informative sessions about relevant legal matters. Secondly, we identified prevalent legal issues submitted for mediation with the committee's help, and designed awareness sessions for residents to nip the bud of legal disputes. We looked into issues of marriage and divorce, property, special needs, land encroachment, and domestic violence. We furthered legal accessibility in the region using a need-based approach through in-person awareness programs and disseminating legal information through brochures. The project's impact was measured by observing the difference between the Judicial Committee and the residents' approach to relevant legal issues before and after the project. The objective of the collaboration with local personnel is to provide continuity to the project even after the fellowship ends. These women face tough challenges, and our "Sustainable Rural Women Development" project under the Millennium Fellowship Program 2023 aims to make a positive impact Our adventure started by visiting a village near Chittagong University in Bangladesh. We had meaningful talks with the women, learning about their families, education, leisure, and health. Many women in the village lacked education and knowledge about health services. We emphasized the importance of children's education, community health care, and activities like farming and crafting for financial empowerment. To kickstart this, we gave them vegetable seeds and hens Our goal was to break the barriers these women face, promoting gender equality and supporting SDGs Goal-5. We believe our project can positively change their lives, providing not just financial stability but also self-reliance. We aim to break the cycle of poverty and inequality. Through this project, we not only uplifted rural women but also developed our own leadership skills, learned to respect opinions, communicated effectively, showed respect, and worked well in a group. Kudos to The Millennium Fellowship Program 2023 for giving us this platform to make a difference! Due to the colossal quantity of non-degradable plastic on earth, it is impossible to completely evade plastic. So the only practical solution is to recycle plastic. To propagate this idea, we are in the initial implementation phase of the project which on completion will be the first on-campus plastic recycling unit in Kerala, India. The plastic collection will occur from within the college as well as the surroundings. This will be sent to the collection point of the unit and sorted. We are currently focusing on building 3 basic machines: 1. Shredder: The Shredder whacks plastic items into small flakes. 2. Extrusion: Extrusion is a continuous process where plastic flakes are inserted into the hopper and extruded into a line of plastic. Could be moulded into products. 3. Sheetpress: The Sheetpress presses shredded plastic into recycled sheets using a hydraulic press, recycling around 20 kg of plastic per sheet. As the quote says “Baby steps lead to giant strides”, we believe this initiative from our part could inspire more people, especially students, to reflect upon their social responsibility and collectively make the earth a better place to live.
