" Millennium Fellowship Project: Nubians for Tomorrow Nubians-Egyptians used to live near the Nile River and were farmers. However, in the 1960s, the Egyptian government displaced over 50,000 Nubians from their homes to build the Aswan Dam. Finding themselves jobless, many Nubian men moved to Cairo or abroad to find jobs, while their wives stayed to raise their children. The lack of a present father figure in Nubian childrens’ lives has caused many teenagers to use drugs. While this is a big problem in the community, it is not being addressed by the government since Nubians are a minority group. Through my project, I researched the types of drugs most commonly used in the community. Then, I created flyers and presentations that explained the health risks of utilizing those drugs. Next, through my connections, I contacted middle schools in one Nubian village to share my materials with their students. While my content didn't prevent people who are already utilizing drugs to stop utilizing them, it helped prevent young teenagers from using drugs in the first place. The first part of the project involves organizing campaigns and visiting schools in remote rural areas in Ghana to enlighten high school students from these schools about the opportunities and programs available to high school students. The Ashesi team will walk them through what they have to do to be fully equipped with the necessary skills to be entitled to these opportunities. The second part of the problem involves organizing a 3-month mentorship program between high school students from rural areas with student volunteers from universities worldwide. The mentor-mentee pairing will be done considering the students' career aspirations. Through this mentorship program, the students will learn from their seniors who when through the process before them. They will be able to gain guidance concerning their path after high school graduation. The podcast would focus on having talks with student entrepreneurs. This would be to discuss how these entrepreneurs came up with their business what inspires them and advice they would give to other students. The Ashesi team sees this as a necessary feature of the project because we would not want students to only focus of graduating and finding work. However, we would want some of these students to start up business which would in tend employ their mates and reduce the rate of unemployment in the country. This project is mainly focused on advancing SDG 4 and promoting the goal 5 of UNAI goals.
