She hopes to further her perspective and learn from the ones of her peers. ABOUT THE MILLENNIUM FELLOWSHIP - CLASS OF 2021 United Nations Academic Impact and MCN are proud to partner on the Millennium Fellowship. In 2021, over 25,000 young leaders on 2,000+ campuses across 153 nations applied to join the Class of 2021. 136 campuses worldwide (just 6%) were selected to host the 2,000+ Millennium Fellows. The Class of 2021 is bold, innovative, and inclusive. UNITED NATIONS ACADEMIC IMPACT AND MCN PROUDLY PRESENT ISHIKA KIRAN, A MILLENNIUM FELLOW FOR THE CLASS OF 2021. University of Delhi | New Delhi, India | Advancing SDG 5 & UNAI 6 " It is truly an honour to be selected for a fellowship so prestigious and enriching. I want to make things better, and I have a vague idea of what could help me achieve that. But, I believe the Millennium Fellowship would help me get the training I need to polish my actions, to transform my ideas into actions. I believe it would connect me with like-minded people and I might even discover new ways to move forward with what I intend to do. I love interacting with people, sharing my stories and hearing their's, because I believe that stories flesh out any entity. There might be more aspects of the gendered digital divide and women empowerment that may have escaped my notice, but which could become clearer after interacting with others. " Millennium Fellowship Project: Bridging the Divide Project Bridging The Divide aims to bridge both a digital divide and an informational one. Having identified accessibility barriers prevalent in our times, this project aims to educate young girls about internet safety measures as well as guide them to meaningful resources, so that they're able to access the empowering facets of the internet. It will also reach out to girls and give them basic knowledge about menstrual health along with a free supply of sanitary napkins so that the stigma around this biological process is no longer a constraint. This Project will principally focus on the rural belts of Odisha, Haryana and Delhi. We called this project "Bridging the Divide" because the first thing that we all agreed upon was the fact that a very clear divide of accessibility exists between women and men. This divide prevents women from ever escaping the cycle of oppression. In some places, it's a digital divide that prevents women from accessing everything that the internet offers and isolates them further. In some, it's the stigma around menstruation that's driving a wedge and preventing women from talking freely about any of their issues. In others, it's a lack of access to important resources like menstrual hygiene products. This project aims to increase accessibility to public spaces for women and is focused on SDG 5. Throughout the sessions that we attended as a part of the Fellowship, the one thing that stood out to us was that no two issues can be treated the same. There are always nuances involved that need to be addressed. We applied this realisation while framing our approach. Another thing that we learnt was to respect the individuality of the people we were to meet. Learning this shaped our conversational approach to sensitisation. The team recognised that a rigid solution could not bring any sustainable change. This is where the diversity of the group came in handy. All of them came from vastly different backgrounds, with a myriad of experiences. Satyam and Ishika hailed from the same city but lived in contrasting localities while Ankit hailed from Sonipat, Haryana and Prachi, New Delhi. The principal problems in all their surroundings were unique and needed to be addressed separately. About the Millennium Fellow Ishika Kiran, an undergrad in History and Political Science at University of Delhi, is keen on exploring the depths and grey areas of the world's social landscape. UNITED NATIONS ACADEMIC IMPACT AND MCN PROUDLY PRESENT ROBERT OTIENO OCHIEL, A MILLENNIUM FELLOW AND CAMPUS DIRECTOR FOR THE CLASS OF 2022. United States International University Africa | Nairobi, Kenya | Advancing SDG 4 & UNAI 3 " Evolution is something I believe to be deeply ingrained in the desires of man, and as the capacity to improve productively remains ever-present, I find that the fulfillment of this capacity is seldom sought in the world around me. I am convinced that it is this same contentment with mediocrity that has allowed for a stagnance in the development of my country Kenya and I am convinced my role as a Millennium Fellow will spur me to bring about the evolution I want. " Millennium Fellowship Project: Excel Tutors Africa I have always dreamed of making practical education accessible to any Kenyan (and in future any African) no matter their background, disabilities or work schedule. My passion for philosophy led me to research what made ancienct Greek societies so great and using a core element of ancient Greek education, the notion that education should be used to build on people's innate talents and interests, Excel tutors was born. Though ancienct Greece served as inspiration you'll have to excuse me for stressing that Rome wasn't built in a day. We are currently working with Kenyan youth through our website and zoom to offer tutoring services but we hope to reach a point where any "Mama Mboga" (Local vegetable seller) can be able to pick up their phone and learn finance essentials in a concise way, or an English professor who hopes to learn the basics of Blockchain to sound smart to their friends in their next meeting! And finally, decades from now, I envision Excel tutors having hundreds of physical mini learning points where anyone could simply walk in and be instructed by a previous Excel Tutors benefitee and learn exactly what they want to know. About the Millennium Fellow Robert Ochiel's greatest asset is his ability to turn ideas into reality. The slow gratification that comes from gruelingly turning nothing into everything you hoped it would be and more is a process that he has grown to appreciate more and more. Despite his passion for technology and innovation he also has a great appreciation for the arts and tries to find correspondence between the two when possible. His experience in the field of community service is growing by the day through his edutech startup Excel Tutors Africa, his role in the Hult Prize organization, his job at Avallain Africa among other initiatives. UNITED NATIONS ACADEMIC IMPACT AND MCN PROUDLY PRESENT GOPIKA K NAIR, A MILLENNIUM FELLOW FOR THE CLASS OF 2023. O.P. Jindal Global University | Sonipat, India | Advancing SDG 4 & UNAI 2 Millennium Fellowship Project: Khwaab Khwaab (Dream) is a project we have undertaken to encourage children to dream for themselves and recognize their attainability. Our focus group is children from the 8th grade at Government Model Sanskriti Primary and Middle School, Model Town, Sonipat. We wish to work with young students who lack the foundational support to cultivate their ability to fulfill their aspirations. We will be conducting 6 sessions pertaining to their capacity building. Providing them with a thorough education will facilitate the children's individual development and enable them to uplift their familial circumstances and influence those in their vicinity. The word 'Khwaab' means 'Dream'. A dream is a goal, a vision of the future self. When one knows their destination, it becomes easier to find their path. But when the destination is unknown, when there is no dream to chase, the path becomes unclear and one gets lost. This journey includes acquiring skills, crossing milestones, honing one's strengths, gathering the required resources, and drawing a roadmap to fulfill the dream. An understanding of the roadmap can pave the way to a successful future. We aim to organize a life skills training program encompassing goal setting, decision-making, problem-solving, self-awareness, time management, and financial management. This holistic training is designed to empower young minds in fulfilling their 'Khwaab'.
