By being a part of such a diverse and global community, not only will I be able to influence but also get inspired by the contributions of my peers. The opportunity to learn and interact with ambitious young people will help me develop personally. It will help me re-imagine ways to achieve my goal of reducing 3.3 grams of plastic for every disposable cup. " Millennium Fellowship Project: De-lid University College London has 4 on-campus cafes and multiple other coffee chain outlets in the greater vicinity of the campus. Each disposable cup of coffee comprises of a plastic lid and a cup made out of plastic and paper. Due to the composition of the disposable cup – plastic and paper – only certain specialist plants in the UK are capable of working on recycling these cups. However, the polypropylene plastic lid can be effectively recycled. I aim to establish ‘Re-lid Bins’ that are used to separately dispose the plastic lids. This segmentation will allow for easy recycling. I strive to spread awareness regarding the cause and encourage students to pursue this green practice. Additionally, I seek to implement the ‘BYOL’ or ‘Bring your own lid’ scheme to promote the practice of carrying your own reusable lids made of materials like metal or rubber. I hope to spread awareness and send more than 1000 lids for recycling. Where our focus was on how we can reduce the causes of climate change by taking small steps like using bicycles or the public transport instead of using personal cars, by reducing pollution and by planting more trees. In our project we planted more than 75 trees to initiate our journey towards a positive change and it will prove itself as an entrée towards a more sustainable future ahead. It is a space where I can make connections with others, listening to their stories and motivations behind their work. Today, the voices of marginalized communities are silenced as their stories remain untold. I want to use the voice that I have in this world to amplify the voices of people experiencing homelessness and the voices of young girls fighting for their right to an education. " Millennium Fellowship Project: Sparking Lives Varshini is working on a collaborative project to create a report on educational inequity and lack of digital access by studying two rural Indian villages. Varshini has been passionate about empowering young girls and giving them a voice through her nonprofit organization known as Sparking Lives. Through this project, she hopes to understand how lack of digital access prevents children in rural areas from attending school and denies them access to educational opportunities. This lack of resources combined with gender inequities has created a situation where many families that have a limited amount of resources often choose to send sons to school over daughters. This project focuses on SDGs 4, 5, and 10- quality education, gender equality, and reduced inequalities. She, along with her team will be conducting interviews of nonprofits, students and teachers in the village, as well as nearby homes providing support to orphaned children. For the final report, she hopes to compile these interviews with the goal of identifying the main barriers to increasing digital and educational access. Her aim with the report is to address the current inequity, systems which perpetuate and exacerbate such inequities, and propose recommendations and ways towards which individuals and NGOs can take first steps to reducing this inequity."
