My project gives me an opportunity to empower girls to know they have more options than the society makes most of them believe they have. That their menses is not something to be ashamed about .And providing them with the material they need to use in their menses in the process .I love that I get to impact young girls in this wholesome way. " Millennium Fellowship Project: UNBOXED A Microsoft study found out that girls develop an interest in STEM around eleven years and lose interest around fifteen years .Some of the reasons for this stated in the study is societal influence ,lack of female role models and negative stereotypes .It is also at the age of twelve when most girls begin their menses .This also comes with the challenge such as period shaming and lack of sanitary material for those girls in underprivileged areas . Unboxed is a project that aims to demystify STEM and menses to girls in primary school. To combat the challenges mentioned above, the team visits primary schools in slum areas to talk about STEM and demystify menses to both boys and girls in an effort to end period shaming .They also invite Women already working in the STEM field and ladies doing stem courses to talk to the girls in these schools. The pandemic situation has shown the rise in concern over food security and interest in healthier diets and quality lifestyles. Thus, it has become crucial to develop ecologically sensitive urban landscapes which integrate food rather than just aesthetics. To put this concept into practice, our project "Agroscape" has focused on developing urban farms in the form of edible landscapes that can be cultivated at the home, institute, and corporate levels. 1. Under Project Agroscape, a small-scale organic farm has been set up in the college campus of ‘Dr. B.N. College of Architecture, Pune.’ Agriculture based landscape has been designed which includes plantations of vegetables such as ‘Eggplant (Solanum melongena), chillies (Capsicum frutescens), Potato (Solanum tuberosum), Curry leaves (Murraya koenigii), Basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum), Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum), Spinach (Spinacia oleracea)’. This produce is readily available and is planned to be utilized for food requirements in the college canteen. In order to set this farm, site visits to Urban farms and Biophilic projects in the vicinity were conducted to gain prior knowledge. 2. To increase our outreach, awareness in community and gain insights from experts in this domain, we have successfully conducted four online webinars under our ‘Organic Farming Techniques’ series. Speakers widely focused on topics such as the Importance of Bees in farming, Urban farming and Understanding an Architect’s role in SDGs. 3. An ‘SDG day’ event was also organized to educate and create awareness among fellow students through fun activities and quizzes. It held a crucial role in team bonding, communication amongst fellows and strengthening intra-team relations. 4. The project will further focus on expanding with Hydroponics (sustainable plantation technique to optimise water usage), Vertical gardening modules and Biophilic installations (with upcycled material) campus-wide. 5. An SDG Student hub has been set up on campus to gain participation of interested students which will ensure there’s no dead end to this initiative. 6. Along with this, we have also launched an outreach program by partnering with the regional Rotaract club. Within this program, our fellow mates are coworking with the Rotaract members to set up urban farms within old age homes and orphanages. Osun State University | Osogbo, Nigeria | Advancing SDG 3 & UNAI 9 " Being a part of the Millennium Fellowship would help me develop my advocacy skills and contribute to my community positively. I am excited about this journey and willing to not just learn but put into practice all I'm taught. " Millennium Fellowship Project: Mental Health and You "Ayo, see what he sent!" I cried bitterly to my friend. "He's threatening me with my nude photos. He wants to blackmail me and he has seized my phone? What did I do to deserve this?" This was me about a year ago dealing with a blackmail episode by my ex-boyfriend. I couldn't understand anything at that point and I cried so much. It was a really low point for me. He texted my parents and told them lies about me, and my father who I care about so much was disappointed in me. The only person I could talk to was Ayo, a friend who I had never met (at that time). He found a way to calm me and put me back on the right track. During that time, my cumulative GPA plunged and I lost courage and face in school. I lost voice. I lost everything, everyone - I was lost. I got angry easily, I shouted at everyone, I just wanted to be alone. I almost lost the one friend that stood by me. We fought everytime as he would correct my every move. I got frustrated at every little correction and I would hurt his feelings. But he still remained. Ayo made me laugh through my depression and brought me back to life. I asked him why he did it and he told me that he had to fight through mental health trauma on his own. He ran away from home, twice and almost committed suicide on one occasion. He told me that he didn't want to see anyone go through the same thing he went through. At that time I thought. "How noble", until I started actively putting my ears at gossip, street talk and news. The rate of suicides in my community alone was alarming - and obviously the government is to busy to care. Someone needs to do something about it. So, I am currently working on a plan to reach out to people and talk to them about their mental health. I stay in Ibadan, Oyo state, Nigeria and school in a remote area in Osun state. These places, I'm sure are oblivious to their mental health and alway blame their ill fate on superstitions. I want to change that. I plan to build a team of well meaning and morally sound individuals who will help me achieve this goal. People need help, and I'm sure with the assistance of the United Nations through the Millennium Fellowship, I can help them. Lastly, I am confident that my passion for charity will be met as I do this course and many children will benefit from it. " Millennium Fellowship Project: Boresha Initiative USIU Africa USIU MCN project . Boresha Initiative at Bethsaida Community Centre The centre was established 3 years ago in Githurai Slums by two well wishers who saw the plight of very young children loitering in the streets. Currently, there are 20 children who found solace in the centre as a home. The centre has been having a lot of issues to tackle with. First, the building is poorly structured thus posing the risk of collapsing. At first this was our agreed plan to try our best to construct a more decent building for them. One of our fellows, Erick, who is good at finance came up with the budget to facilitate this. It turned out to be very expensive given the short time span we had to complete the project. Nonetheless, we were optimistic as we thought of the idea of getting funds from donors. For instance, painting companies, cement companies and iron sheets to sponsor part of it. We identified the companies and three fellows agreed to assist with the proposals writing and sending. Some responses were not very encouraging as most of the companies gave responses in line of the notice being very short and they had already budgeted for their financial year. This marks the continuation of our sustainable project which is to eventually build a shelter for the children. In the meantime, we focused on the following sustainable development goals zero hunger, quality education, no poverty, fitness and well being and partnership for the goals. Partnership between USIU Africa Millennium Fellows and Beta care Initiative One of our fellows suggested we partner with one of the community-based organization which he chairs, in order to go offer community service to the children. We worked hand in hand with them, contributed funds and planned as to how the day will be successful. The centre had inadequacy of food and other necessities. We bought them a lot of food supplies and went there to assist with the cleaning as the place was very dirty. We made sumptuous meals for them as they rarely see this. We also had games and activities with them to engage them on health and fitness. It was interesting as some of them want to become footballers and athletes when they grow up. We also gave them a talk on the importance of fitness and well being and encouraged them to be exercising often. We also have a session with one of the fellows who is passionate about mental health awareness who decided to talk to the children as how they can be positive and take care of their minds. This was very important as most of them have had very rough past experiences that have been traumatic hence affecting them till date. She talked to them, we encouraged and mentored them that everything is possible under the sun, their past should not act as a limitation to them and assured them that we will always be there for them by constantly visiting them and interacting with them. We mingled with them and they started opening up to us. We decided to organize a talk for the next session on mental awareness on how to feed the mind positively. We closed the day with donating some essentials including food supplies and toiletries. Our final project at Bethsaida Community Centre was giving out further contribution to the centre as the needs were weigh beyond. We could not solve all of them but at least we tried all we could. We contributed amongst ourselves together with our friends and managed to buy the children books, uniform and stationeries as the school would be opened eventually and they did not have these. We also bought them food supplies and toiletries. We had another mentorship session mainly to continue our urge for mental awareness and encourage them to dream big. We had playing sessions with them to promote fitness and wellbeing. We discussed at length with the owner of the place as to how we can be able to finally help them construct a better building and we are now working on that About the Millennium Fellow Eric Munene Murithi is a Sophomore in United States International University Africa studying Applied Computer Technology.
