As Millennium Fellowship connects us with people from different fields and helps us gain skills it will be really helpful for us to make our problem visible to a larger audience. Coming from the same community will give me immense pleasure to bring some positive change to my community. " Millennium Fellowship Project: Aghni This project is based on educating people regarding clean cooking stoves. People in rural villages of Nepal use firewoods as their main source of energy to date. They spend around 5 to 7 hrs daily around 'chulo'(a traditional cooking stove which is placed in the centre of the kitchen cum living room). The 'chulo' used by them makes a lot of smoke which affects their health. The main aim of our project is to teach people about the improvised cooking stove which will not produce smoke and use fewer firewoods. So that we would reduce air pollution, reduce cutting down of trees and reduce lungs related diseases. We will host one-day seminars and workshops in the rural village of the central hilly region of Nepal. There we will make people aware of the health and environmental hazards of the traditional cooking stoves and why we should upgrade to improvised cooking stoves. We will also teach them how to install and maintain these stoves. For this, we will be collaborating with Kathmandu University-Integrated Rural Development Program and Nepal Technology and Innovation Centre. These said organizations will provide us with training on the installation and maintenance of improvised cooking stoves. We are also planning to reach out to Alternative Energy Promotion Centre for aid to distribute some improvised cooking stoves. I am eager to join this interconnected community with diverse culture, and I believe that through our different experiences and backgrounds, we can inspire one another and collectively contribute to our goals. " " Millennium Fellowship Project: The Mindful Project The Mindful Project is a peer support and self-evaluation project centered around the concept of self-compassion and positive psychology. Self-compassion is a concept which puts emphasis on being kind to oneself, recognizing that weakness is a part of humanity, and being mindful of one’s emotions. Positive psychology places emphasis on one’s strengths and potential to thrive. The project emphasizes the importance of being “mindful” of 3 aspects: one’s emotional state, one’s strengths, and others’ emotional needs. Hong Kong young people are currently under a lot of stress due to the pandemic, academic matters, and difficulty in employment. Self-help has also become particularly important during these hard times since young people often do not receive in-person support from their friends due to social distancing restrictions. So, I would like to promote different self-help measures to encourage their self-awareness of their emotional states and to help them realize their potential. Before young people can utilize different well-researched methods to improve their mental health, understanding emotional changes is crucial. This allows them to address this matter calmly without feeling confused or scared. Therefore, I would like to introduce different types of thinking patterns that will influence one’s emotional changes through social media, letting them know the possible reasons behind their emotional changes. This process can improve their psychological literacy and allow them to reflect on their daily emotional patterns. Afterwards, I plan to promote mindfulness practices and gratitude journals through workshops to further improve young people’s self-awareness as well as self-compassion. Mindfulness is the state of being present and being aware of one’s thoughts, feelings and sensations. The practices have improved people’s sensitivity to their own emotions, their resilience against adversities, as well as reduced their anxiety. Since it allows one to be present with themselves, it also improves self-compassion by letting one acknowledge without repression that their weaknesses are what make them human. Practices such as simple breathing exercises, walking exercises, and mindfulness eating are easy and quick to do, but are proven effective. Other than that, gratitude journaling is a great way to not only allow young people to use their creativity, but to also appreciate themselves more and understand their strengths. Gratitude journaling involves one jotting down the things they are grateful for every day in their lives, or to recognize their own achievements. This allows young people to realize their strengths, as well as increase their self-worth and develop a more optimistic view of their lives. However, they may be unfamiliar to both of these practices, so interactive workshops with practitioners of these practices will be a great way to inspire them to start the journey. Practitioners can convey the benefits of doing such practices and boost their confidence in using these exercises in their daily lives. To increase the appeal of these workshops, fun materials, such as glitter jars for mindfulness, and well-designed journals will be prepared. Despite the pandemic, peer and family support still remains an important element in eliminating self-stigmatization and improving young people’s self-love. While many friends and family members are eager to support their loved ones, they often do not know the means to do so. Hence, I plan to produce a manual to guide family members and friends on appropriate ways to encourage self-compassion and support their loved ones who may be facing emotional distress. Peer support can also be done through trends on social media, having mental health ambassadors on campus, and establishing a peer support network. For example, social media platforms can be utilized through encouraging social media users to start a 7-day trend, recording things they are proud of every day, and inviting their friends to do the same. This forms an atmosphere of self-compassion. A peer support network and school ambassadors can also promote self-compassion through exhibitions around campus, identifying those who are in emotional distress, and sharing of own personal experiences, such as coping strategies and the practice of mindfulness. Sometimes, we wonder, "Why am I feeling anxious and sleepy?" but we don’t associate those feelings with what we’re eating. " Millennium Fellowship Project: Substance use Kabwata Youth Friendly Substance use among the youth is a growing concern in communities in Zambia. Kabwata clinic in Lusaka holds Youth Friendly Sessions every Friday where different topics addressing adolescent problems are addressed. This project aimed to sensitize the youths at Kabwata Youth Friendly Space on substance abuse. Objective: To sensitize youths aged 15-18, who reside in Kabwata, on substance abuse. Progress and achievements: We were welcomed by a group of inquisitive and active youths, and successfully delivered our presentation on substance use. Challenges and solutions: An invited guest specialized in mental health did not make it as he had other commitments. We instead had a fellow member who is trained in peer education, mental health, and psychosocial counselling address them. Conclusion: Substance use is a growing concern which has also been noted by the youths at the friendly space. It is key for communities to have such talks as these to increase advocacy and train more peer educators. INRODUCTION Substance abuse is a well-known concern, particularly, amongst the youths in Kabwata. This propelled our group to embark on a project on substance use to sensitize the youths found at Kabwata Youth Friendly Space. On Friday 25th October, 2024, our team of eight members joined a group of twenty youths gathered at Kabwata clinic for their afternoon talk. A presentation on substance use which included, understanding substance use and addiction, the effects of substance use on the brain, the science of prevention, the reasons for abusing drugs and impacts of drug abuse was shared. In between the presentation refreshments were shared and a game of charades was played to make the people feel free and interact with each other. The talk ended with a question-and-answer session, and words of advice from a fellow team member who is a peer educator, mental health and psychosocial counsellor. OBJECTIVE • To sensitize youths aged 15-18, who reside in Kabwata, on substance abuse. PROGRESS AND ACHIEVEMENTS The program began at 14:30 hours and ended at 16:00 hours. We were welcomed by the staff and facilitator at the centre, and he youths at the centre were very inquisitive and actively contributed to the talk. By the end of the afternoon, we had successfully completed our project on substance use sensitization to the youths at Kabwata Youth friendly. CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS We planned to have an invited guest specialized in mental health to address the youths, but he did not make it as he had other commitments on that day. We instead had a fellow member who is trained in peer education, mental health, and psychosocial counselling, to address them. CONCLUSION Substance use is a growing concern which has also been noted by the youths at the friendly space. It is key for communities to have such talks as these to increase advocacy and train more peer educators. RECOMMENDATIONS More sensitization should be done on rehabilitation services as most of the youth have little or no faith in the effectiveness of it. Peer education programmes should also be introduced and headed by the clinic, to certify more youths as advocates of mental health.
